Original printed wrappers with a woodcut depicting the nativity to the upper cover signed 'Lee' in the cut. 8pp. A very good copy the binding a little delicate but secure and with traces of having previously been bound within a larger volume to the spine. The contents with a touch of toning are otherwise clean throughout and remain free from any previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. A poetic celebration of the nativity by an unnamed eighteenth-century author embellished with a charming naive woodcut. The work first appeared under a slightly different title c.1750 ESTC N65956 although only early nineteenth-century copies such as the present example are recorded in British institutions. Bound in half brown calf and rebacked in modern matching calf. Original marbled boards. Front hinge visible but sound. Prelims foxed and browned other pages less so. Frontis. partially loose. Generally a sound copy of a scarce item. Ascribed sometimes to John Galt one of the jurors probably erroneously. Satire about the infamous and scandalous trial of the Scottish Presbyterian Rev. Alexander Fletcher for breach of promise to marry Miss Eliza Dick. A prior trial in the court of King's bench in 1824 was dismissed without a verdict. This second trial was held by an ecclesiastical court the United Associate Presbytery of London and by decision of that court Fletcher was suspended from exercise of his office and from church fellowship. The "special jury" consisted of twelve illustrious Scots including Sir Walter Scott who was elected foreman. DNB hardcover
