Small octavo printed without the name of the printer the place probably Germany nor the date but c1895. Black/cream marbled paper boards with vellum-look spine and corners with a hand-written title in black ink in an old style. This is a facsimile of Tondalus Ain Ritter Ausz Hybernia printed in Augsburg in 1515 by Hannsen Froschauer. At the time this book was made the original was held at the Berlin Staatsbibliothek but it was moved to the Moscow Library during WWII where it remains. The Visio Tnugdali "Vision of Tnugdalus" is a 12th-century religious text reporting the otherworldly vision of the Irish knight Tnugdalus later also called "Tundalus" "Tondolus" or in English translations "Tundale." It was "one of the most popular and elaborate texts in the medieval genre of visionary infernal literature" and had been translated from the original Latin forty-three times into fifteen languages by the 15th century. The work remained most popular in Germany with ten different translations into German including this one which is in a high renaissance German. This facsimile is in good condition. The inside front and back covers have catalog entries from 1892-1893 pasted in from a German source showing different editions of Tondolus der Ritter. Front and back end papers have some foxing the first blank has an inscription that says the original of the book is in Berlin BSM Signatur: Na 6219. We can find no mention of this little book anywhere in the standard bibliographic sites. An interesting and unusual little ort of publishing history. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall . S. N. hardcover
