18204569Paris: Chez Martinet 1820. A lovely copy of this scarce cartoon. Unsigned but the initials LL. are printed to the lower right of the plate. We are unable to find a caricaturist with those initials Leander always signed his work. A gentleman is bowing to a couple approaching him. The lady tips her parasol. All are dressed as dandies. Attractive hand colouring. To the bottom left of the pate it is written in ink "Chez Martinet". A clean print with just a little marking / darkening to the sheet. Tipped onto a slightly larger piece of stiff card. A very nice item. Plate is 32cm x 24cm. The backing card is 35.5cm x 30cm. First edition. . Un bel exemplaire de cette caricature rare. Elle n'est pas signée mais les initiales LL. sont imprimées en bas à droite de la planche. Nous n'avons pas trouvé de caricaturiste portant ces initiales Leander signait toujours ses œuvres. Un monsieur s'incline devant un couple qui s'approche de lui. La dame incline son ombrelle. Tous sont habillés en dandys. Jolie mise en couleur à la main. En bas à gauche du pâté il est écrit à l'encre Chez Martinet. Impression propre avec juste un peu de marquage / assombrissement sur la feuille. Elle est collée sur un morceau de carte rigide un peu plus grand. Un très bel objet. La plaque mesure 32 cm x 24 cm. La carte de support mesure 355 cm x 30 cm. Chez Martinet unknown
1852LTH3-F-24London: Houlston and Stoneman 1852-3. Leather. Good. 6.5" by 4". None. Two interesting novels bound as one. The first Uncle Tom in England appears to be an english novel which draws a parallel to Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. The author is not attributed although to the rear there is an essay by anti-slavery campaigner and president of the British and Foreign anti-slavery society Thomas Clarkson. To the preface is written that the author has connected its plot to the work of Mrs Stowe and is therefore to be looked on as an Echo or sequel to 'Uncle Tom'. Several characters share their names with Stowe's. This is the third edition of Uncle Tom in England printed the same year as the first American edition. Uncle tom in England is an extremely scarce and unusual text. The second novel to this text is Benjamin Disraeli's novel Venetia. Venetia was originally released in 1837 and was published so as to form an income for Disraeli in a time of need. It is a romance based on the characters of Shelley and Byron. In a half calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally generally smart with heavy rubbing to spine and boards. Spine label and head and tail of spine are particularly rubbed. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Prior owner's inscription to front pastedown 'John P Maitland Family Heriloom'. Another inscription to recto of front endpaper dated 1918. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with scattered spots throughout. Good Houlston and Stoneman hardcover

Foxing throughout. Inscription on endpapers indicating the book was presented to William Thompson by his teacher D. Curtis. Text unmarked. The title can be taken as sarcastic as the pamphlet apparently issued with the support of a half-dozen or more religious organizations excoriates the U. S. Government's barborous betrayal of many if not most of the 900 treaties during the prior 100 years and calls upon Christian authority and principles to "set crooked things straight." 18755523Paris: N.D. Photo / X. Photo. C1875. Two attractive albumen photographs of Paris pasted onto two sides of the same piece of stiff card. Both are 21cm x 28cm. One is a view of the Champ Elysées taken from on top of the Arc de Triomphe. A good clean and bright image showing quite a crowd of carriages on the road with pedestrians on the wide pavements to the side. The view fades into the distance. Clean and good photograph. The second side shows the front of the National Opera with carriages omnibuses and pedestrians milling around. What is particularly interesting in this shot is that the lamp posts are being installed in Front of the Opera. These enable us to date the photograph as they were originally installed in 1875. These form part of the "Ring of Light" Ceinture de Lumière a set of 60 lighting fixtures designed by architect Charles Garnier as integral to the opera house's exterior when it opened on January 5 1875. A nice photograph if slightly faded. The backing card is 25.5cm x 30.5cm and has a couple of closed tears to the edges. not affecting the prints. The sheet has obviously been removed from an album at some point. . Deux superbes photographies sur papier albuminé représentant Paris collées sur les deux faces d'un même carton rigide. Elles mesurent toutes deux 21 cm x 28 cm. L'une représente une vue des Champs-Élysées prise depuis le sommet de l'Arc de Triomphe. Une image nette et lumineuse montrant une foule de voitures sur la route avec des piétons sur les larges trottoirs latéraux. La vue s'estompe au loin. Une photographie nette et de bonne qualité. Le deuxième côté montre la façade de l'Opéra national avec des voitures des omnibus et des piétons qui s'affairent. Ce qui est particulièrement intéressant dans cette photo c'est que des lampadaires sont en cours d'installation devant l'Opéra. Cela nous permet de dater la photographie car ils ont été installés à l'origine en 1875. Ils font partie de la « Ceinture de Lumière » un ensemble de 60 luminaires conçus par l'architecte Charles Garnier comme partie intégrante de l'extérieur de l'opéra lors de son ouverture le 5 janvier 1875. Une belle photographie bien qu'un peu décolorée. La carte de support mesure 255 cm x 305 cm et présente quelques déchirures fermées sur les bords qui n'affectent pas les tirages. 1880114019Germany: Made in Germany. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1880. Presumed First UK Edition. Hardcover. Blue cloth-covered boards with a untitled plain cloth spine. The front board has the title decorative borders and an heraldic 'Welsh Dragon' tooled in gilt on the front cover the gilt a little dulled in places. The rear board has blind stamped decoration. The edges and corners are slightly rubbed here and there. NO date or publisher shown other than 'Made in Germany' on the bottom of the front board. This type of publication was usually sold as a gift 'souvenir' and invariably printed abroad and could be any date from the 1850s to the 1890s - often with the name of the gift shop on the rear pastedown - in this instance though the rear pastedown has the Title followed by the legend - "Including Jenny Jones and Ellen Morgan of Beddgelert & The Ladies of Llangollen" . 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall. Internally is a panoramic fold-out of 12 pages each page containing 2 Sepia images of Ladies in different types of Welsh Costume and including 'Salmon Fishermen with Coracles' and 'The Emblem of Wales' as tooled on the front cover. The 'fold-out' measures 3 foot 8 inches 111 cm . Circa 1880s the images usually taken from pre-published steel engravings and manufactured abroad. A long tear on the fold between images on pages 4/5 but neatly repaired to the reverse and not impairing the images just the borders. Otherwise in EXCELLENT clean bright condition. A former owners' name etc written in ink on the blank reverse of the last 2 images. The paper under the spine split internally but NO damage to the book or images. Scarce to find an ephemera item in such very good condition. A Lovely period piece of Welsh History/Art/Costume. Would be wonderful framed. See Images. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall . Made in Germany hardcover

AUTHOR: Sir Francis Carruthers Gould 1844-1924 self-taught satirist and political cartoonist began his working life in a bank moved to the London Stock Exchange. Started to contribute regularly to Truth magazine in 1879. Joined the Pall Mall Gazette in 1887 becoming the first-ever staff political cartoonist on a daily newspaper. In 1893 he joined the Westminster Gazette and subsequently became acting assistant editor as well as cartoonist. In 1894 Gould founded his own monthly journal Picture Politics which ran for 20 years. Politically he was a dedicated Liberal described by Lord Rosebery as one of the most remarkable assets of the Liberal Party. He was knighted after the Liberal victory in 1906. Goulds caricatures were never too savage he claimed I etch with vinegar not vitriol. During the First World War he designed a series of Toby Jug caricatures Prominent Personages of the Great War including Woodrow Wilson Lloyd George Haig and Foch Reginald E. Booker hardcover

Generally a sound copy of a scarce item. Ascribed sometimes to John Galt one of the jurors probably erroneously. Satire about the infamous and scandalous trial of the Scottish Presbyterian Rev. Alexander Fletcher for breach of promise to marry Miss Eliza Dick. A prior trial in the court of King's bench in 1824 was dismissed without a verdict. This second trial was held by an ecclesiastical court the United Associate Presbytery of London and by decision of that court Fletcher was suspended from exercise of his office and from church fellowship. The "special jury" consisted of twelve illustrious Scots including Sir Walter Scott who was elected foreman. DNB hardcover
