An extremely scarce work with the only copy on LibraryHub held at the Britsih Library. ESTC reference no: T51993. Collated complete. In the title 'Squire Walsingham' is a pseudonym for William Arnall Mother Osborne is a pseudonym of James Pitt. Arnall and Pitt founded the pro-Walpole Daily Gazetteer using the pseudonym Francis Walsingham and Mother Osborne. 'Horace to Fannius' is an imitation of Carm. ii. 8. In addition to this 'apology for printing a certain nobleman's epistle to Dr Sh-w--n' referes to John Baron Hervey as the Nobleman and Dr Sherwin as the addressee of the Epistle. With the text in Latin and English. A very scarce parody of this classical piece of literature. Disbound as issued. Externally bright with scattered spots. Ink spill to the top edges. Final leaf is detached but present. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright with light scattered spots to pages. Good J Huggonson unknown

Published by Order of the House of Lords 1710. 327pp last 3 pages have suffered damage and have some repairs title page rebacked some pages are sl brown but nice and tight new endpapers rebound in brown buckram raised bands leatehr spine label. Henry Sacheverell 1674-1724 was a popular preacher at Oxford University. His controversial printed sermons attracted attention in London. In 1709 he became chaplain at St Saviour’s in Southwark. In November of that year he made his most contentious speech to date attacking Catholics and dissenters by comparing the Gunpowder Plot to the execution of Charles I. Despite an order banning the printing of the sermon by the Lord Mayor he independently published it prompting the Whig government to take action. Articles of impeachment for high crimes and misdemeanours were drawn up to which Sacheverell gave an uncompromising reply. Found guilty he was banned from preaching for 3 years 1979 invoice for previous owner tucked in at front ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall . Jacob Tonson hardcover
