68208London: James S. Virtue 1857. History / Art / Architecture Small folio 34 x 25cm pp.250. Illustrated with twenty-one steel engraved plates and numerous wood-engravings throughout the text. Bound in contemporary half dark blue morocco titled in gilt. Some dampstaining mostly marginal a few light marks within. Binding worn joints starting or cracked in places. Very good. In 1853 the Crystal Palace building was moved from Hyde Park in London to suburban Sydenham. It was set up with a number of permanent fine arts courts Assyrian Egyptian Greek Roman Renaissance etc and industrial courts. Owen Jones and Digby Wyatt were responsible for the fine arts courts. It was until its destruction by fire in 1936 a great center of popular entertainment instruction and cultural activities. Blue boards white paper spine. 10.5 cms x 18.5 cms. xv1 'Directions to the Binder'3859 Index 12 engraved plates collated as correct and situated as directed to binder uncut edges and unopened at least in part; internally clean tight and unmarked no provenance markings at all with no obvious gutter openings; edges being uncut sometimes have thin marginal brown strips to extended leaves would thus rate it internally Fine for age; covers are generally clean and apparently as originally issued spine label has short title 'third edition' and price of 8s. .i.e.8 shillings outer corners inevitably somewhat rubbed or bumped lower spine paper is missing along front joint for length of c. 4 cms and width of 1 cm. leaving bottom ends of some gatherings exposed a further much smaller chip to bottom back joint top spine good so at least Good rating for age for covers. Hooper's name does not actually appear anywhere in this edition. Aside from bottom spine this is a remarkably good copy of this ipopular work exactly as issued. This 3rd edition is moreover apparently extremely scarce I have been unable to locate any other copy mentioned on the web at time of listing being indeed significantly enlarged from the 334 pp. of the 1814 UK 2nd edition with no index pagination mentioned.
