195583742Tokyo: Hokuseido 1955. First edition first printing. Presentation copy inscribed by the editor Ichiro Nishizaki on the front free endpaper "For Dr. Garland Taylor with remembrances and gratitude from the editor Ichiro Nishizaki. Tokyo Japan" and with a typescript of the English translation of his introduction tipped-in following the Japanese language version. Nishizaki was studying the author Lafcadio Hearn when he came across this series of vignettes published in the Times-Picayune in 1925 preceding Faulkner's work as a novelist. Nishizaki took took it upon himself to collect and edit them for this volume writing in the introduction that "those ten or more writings of his printed in the Times-Picayune have not been collected yet so that I tried to edit those early works of Faulkner in his days of apprenticeship in literature if we may so call it picking them up from the Times-Picayune from the end of 1924-1925 which papers I looked through under the good-will of Dr. Garland Taylor of the Howard-Tilton Memorial Library of Tulane University where I stayed as a Fulbright research scholar". The original introduction is in Japanese the text of the vignettes is English and for this presentation copy to Garland Taylor Nishizaki tipped-in a typescript of his introduction in English. A wonderful association copy of this scarce work. Octavo. Original blue cloth titles to spine gilt. With dust jacket. Light partial tanning to endpapers tipped-in typescript portion has been re-inserted leaving a trace of old glue visible in the gutter. IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION UNUSUAL IN THIS CONDITION AND VERY SCARCE IN THE DUSTJACKET WITH AN INTERESTING ASSOCIATION NOTE TO THE FRONT PASTEDOWN. Original publisher's three-quarter blue cloth-backed silver foil-covered boards with illustration of a plane to the front cover spine lettered in silver silver top edge; original publisher's paper-covered slipcase with title label to front board and spine. About fine with some slight fading to the spine; in the extremely fragile slipcase with some wear along the edges and completely free of any of the usual repairs or restoration. An excellent example scarce in this condition. Housed in a custom quarter leather box. Pylon tells the story of a trio of airplane barnstormers stunt pilots who live on the outskirts of society. An unnamed reporter intrigued and enamored by the trio's unique lifestyle becomes emotionally invested in the trio which ultimately leads to tragedy. Following the financial success of his novel Sanctuary 1931 and writing for Hollywood Faulkner took up flying in the early 1930s which gave him much of the raw material for Pylon. It is one of the few books written by Faulkner that is not set in the fictional Yoknapatawpha Country in Mississippi instead set in New Valois an area very similar to New Orleans. The book was adapted into the classic movie Tarnished Angels 1957 directed by Douglas Sirk and starring Rock Hudson. . Signed by Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine. Text block bound in mesh and unprinted red paper wrappers housed in likely fourth printing good dust jacket with several small chips some loss along the top of the front panel affecting several letters and modest toning on the spine. Likely used as an in-house copy for review copy or a publisher's file copy. Filmed in 1933 as The Story of Temple Drake with Miriam Hopkins in the title role. Both the book and film were controversial and the latter was banned for several years. We've never seen another copy in this format. Set in Mississippi during and after the US Civil War the novel follows members of the Sartoris family whose later doings were chronicled in the earlier SARTORIS; and Ab Snopes of the Yoknatawpha Snopeses "one of the most pernicious families in all of Faulkner" Padgett.
