Commentary by Stephen M. Ross and Noel Polk.

A novel by the American author William Faulkner 1897-1962The Sound and the Fury employs several narrative styles including stream of consciousness. Published in 1929 The Sound and the Fury was Faulkner's fourth novel and was not immediately successful. In 1931 however when Faulkner's sixth novel Sanctuary was published the book became a commercial success with Faulkner beginning to receive critical attention. "I wish publishing was advanced enough to use colored ink . I'll just have to save the idea until publishing grows up to it." - William Faulkner 1929. It was much later with this edition that The Folio Society determined that it could be printed in color and drew on the expertise of two noted scholars to work on fulfilling Faulkner's idea. Stephen M. Ross and Noel Polk undertook the painstaking task of identifying each different time-level to be coloured while keeping the original italic-roman shifts. Thus this edition is the FIRST publication of any copy of The Sound and The Fury with colored text. The Folio Society unknown
