Stated first printing in publisher's black cloth with gilt titles decorated with red lines. collection of seven related pieces of short fiction by American author William Faulkner sometimes considered a novel. The most prominent character and unifying voice is that of Isaac McCaslin "Uncle Ike." Though originally published as a short story collection Faulkner considered the book to be a novel in the same way The Unvanquished is considered a novel. The action takes place mostly in Jefferson the Yokanapatawpha County seat and the best known pieces are "The Bear" and "Pantaloon in Black." A very good clean and unmarked copy with the following noted: rubbing to bottom edges; partial fading of spine gilt; professional removal of name stamp on endpaper and top foreedge lightly affecting paper color; otherwise a very good copy. The dust jacket is from a latter printing but in the same format with list of titles ending in The Mansion on back panel and is price-clipped with a tiny spine head chip and professional internal tissue repair to a small closed tear on rear panel but ese near fine. 1970100620Bern Porter 1970. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. William Faulkner was an artist in the San Francisco Bay Area during the Fifties and Sixties. A painting he'd done titled "Henry" affected so many poets around the world that this book was made to collect them in one place. The book was published by Bern Porter himself an artist as well as a publisher and a scientist on the Manhattan Project. The book was owned by Fred Martin an artist who was a leader in the San Francisco Figurative movement in the fifties and was a longtime administrator at the San Francisco Art Institute shepherding many artist projects through their doors. The book is signed by Bern Porter his wife the anthropoligist Margaret Eudine Preston the photographer Kem Lee and Faulkner himself. The book is inscribed to Martin by Porter. Also included is a handwritten letter signed by Faulkner to Fred Martin and a signed typewritten card. Printed in limited quantities it's unknown how many had been distributed. Bern Porter hardcover
