196234871New York: Random House 1962. First edition stated first printing. 8vo publisher’s red cloth gilt lettered on upper cover and spine with ruling in light red in the original dustjacket. 305pp. A very good copy in a near very good dustjacket the text is fine and fresh a little residue to the front pastedown and fly the cloth bright with only minor evidence of age the jacket is handsome though with some light edge rubbing and an abrasion to the surface layer of the paper on the bottom rear. FIRST EDITION OF THIS PULITZER-PRIZE WINNING NOVEL THE AUTHOR’S LAST PUBLISHED WORK AS WELL AS BEING TRULY ONE OF HIS BEST NOVELS AND THE WINNER OF HIS SECOND PULITZER. This novel made Faulkner one of only a tiny handful of authors to be awarded the Pulitzer more then once. Unlike many of his earlier works it is a more straight forward narration and eschews the complicated literary techniques that were his earlier calling-card for many readers this contributes to it being one of his best works. It is also a much lighter and picaresque story than people typically associate with William Faulkner being a humorous coming-of-age story involving horse smuggling a brothel and a racehorse! 196251693London: Chatto & Windus 1962. First printing. Near fine in near fine jacket. First UK edition of Faulkner's second Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and his last work in the form. Set in the author's Yoknapatawpha County and incorporating characters from previous novels the events and emotions of THE REIVERS are acutely observed and precisely rendered although the novel exhibits markedly less of Faulkner's characteristic stylistic complexity and experimental structure than his earlier works. This allowed for a relatively straightforward film adaptation starring Steve McQueen in 1969 notable for co-star Rupert Crosse's nomination for a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award - the first such nomination for an African American actor - and its score by an already accomplished John Williams. A beautiful copy of a significant work by one of the greatest US writers of the 20th century. 7.75'' x 5''. Original blue cloth with gilt-lettered spine. In original price-clipped sepia dust jacket designed by John Woodcock. 284 pages. Faint offsetting to fly leaves and a bit to jacket front flap. Signed flat by William Faulkner on publisher's limitation page limited edition #203/500. DL consignment. Shelved Case 6. William Falkner was born September 25 1897 in New Albany Mississippi. Faulkner had an early interest in stories fostered by tales of his home in Mississippi and his family. Faulkner's surname would change from Falkner to Faulkner in 1918 after a typesetting error put "Faulkner" on his first book of poetry a name he would use for the rest of his writing career. While many of his contemporaries came to live in Europe Faulkner instead chose to remain in the US moving to live in New Orleans in 1925. There Faulkner would write his first novel "Soldier's Pay" beginning a long career as one of America's most acclaimed novelists. In 1949 Faulkner would win the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Faulkner's final novel was "The Reivers" published in 1962 just a month before his death in July of that year. It would go on to posthumously win the 1963 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction an award Faulkner had previously won for his novel "A Fable" marking him as one of only four authors to have won the award more than once.

Though well-received upon release "The Reivers" has earned the scorn of many Faulkner scholars who dismiss it as a lesser work for it's more straightforward narration and lighthearted tone eschewing many of the traits that had made Faulkner so beloved. Despite these criticisms the novel remains well-liked by general audiences enough so to earn a movie adaptation of the same name in 1969 starring Steve McQueen. 1388969. Shelved Dupont Bookstore. 196247116NY: Random House 1962. The Reivers: A Reminiscence published in 1962 is the last novel by the American author William Faulkner. It was published a month before his death. The bestselling novel was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1963. This copy SIGNED BY FAULKNER is a bit of a mystery. In 1961 Faulkner began writing his nineteenth and final novel The Reivers. On June 17 1962 Faulkner suffered a serious injury in a fall from his horse which led to thrombosis. He suffered a fatal heart attack on July 6 1962 at the age of 64. This book club edition was published in early 1962 so would have been one of Faulkner's last published books to have been signed. Book Club edition in publisher's full red cloth gilt lettering and facsimile signature on the front cover and no gilt stamping or title on the spine! gilt facsimile of author's signature on front cover top edge light red mustard-yellow endpapers Book Club deboss marker on rear cover. Copyright page identical to the trade edition including "First Printing". Possibly an early trial run of the book club edition that would explain why the spine is unlettered Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1963. An unusual interesting and maybe unique copy for the serious Faulkner collector. See all photos. . Signed by Author. Book Club BCE/BOMC. Hard Cover. Very Good. Random House Hardcover
