Bound in full crushed green morocco five raised bands gilt lettering spine and front cover front cover image of two trees with initials CR bottom of left tree moire silk end papers top edge gilt. Period bookplate of Charles Ernest Green front pastedown. Gift inscription pasted on card stock front flyleaf reads: " Christmas Greetings to C.E.G. This binding is by Clara Rice and is a fine sample of her work. The book has been on exhibition at the Arts & Crafts Guild. R.J.D.". No Date to inscription circa 1903. The San Francisco Call newspaper shows an article dated Dec. 12. 1903 tha is titled "Guild of Arts & Crafts opens Unique exhibition" and further states "Miss Clara Rice Secretary. Her mosaic leather work in book-binding is much admired". And the Bulletin of the Dept. of Labor Vol. 9 issues 54-56 shows " Guild of Arts & Crafts of California Miss Clara Rice Secretary 639 Kearney St. San Francisco". Very Good front cover and spine uniformly lighter than rear cover top corner front cover small bump. Originally started in 1894 the first run of the Guild of Arts & Crafts in San Francisco lasted until some time in 1897. Douglas van Denburgh launched the second Guild of Arts & Crafts in San Francisco in 1903 and that group lasted at least through 1910. And the poet Edward Rowland Sill was principal of Oakland High School California and professor of English literature at the University of California during the period 1874 - 1882. He died at the age of 46 in 1887 a minor American poet of high quality who but for his early death may have gained a higher place. Kyôto Kôka 3 1846 Chôundô a lovely oblong string-bound album with the original blind-stamped green covers and printed paper title label all in a clasped chitsu case. 17.1 x 23.7 cm. The title refers to a famous line from a Bashô haiku describing a "summer's grove". There is but one delicate color-printed illustration of a bird in flight but many pages of white on black ishizuri style calligraphy and delicate renderings of the poems in an elegant calligraphed hand. This copy from the library of Halleck's biographer James Grant Wilson himself with a small ink autograph note mounted to a preliminary binder's blank "Purchased at the sale of the Sedgwick Library New York March 27 1877. Jas. Grant Wilson." New York lawyer William Ellery Sedgwick had died in 1873; his library was sold at the Clinton Hall sale rooms on March 27 and March 28 in 1877 with a 68-page catalog published by Leavitt. Wilson has somewhat grangerized his own copy here with six related supplementary autograph pieces tipped in including a manuscript agreement between publisher J. S. Redfield and Fitz Greene Halleck to "Stereotype print and publish and endeavor to sell your Poems in one volume 12mo the proceeds of sales after paying . . . $325.21 recently paid by me to Harper & Brothers and all other expenses to be equally divided between you and me as fast as realized" dated New York April 12 1852 signed and endorsed by Halleck on the verso. Redfield published three editions of Halleck's poems between 1852 and 1854. Additional inserted material includes 1887 letters from Horatio Gates Jones and from William Leete Stone to Wilson on articles submitted for Appletons' Cyclopedia of American Biography of which Wilson was an editor; an 1851 note from Edward Robinson to William Alfred Jones early in the latter's career as librarian of Columbia college; and two notes from William Alfred Jones to Wilson on literary matters thanking Wilson for a book on Knickerbocker literature asking for return of a photograph used as source of an engraving including thanks to Wilson for his kind words about "poor Hoffman"--presumably the Knickerbocker author Charles Fenno Hoffman who was institutionalized for insanity for the last thirty years of his life.
