This is the author's third book of poetry and is quite scarce. From Wikipedia: "Everson was an influential member of the San Francisco Renaissance in poetry and worked closely with Kenneth Rexroth during this period of his life. Throughout his life Everson was a devotee of the work and lifestyle of poet Robinson Jeffers. Much of his work as a critic was done on Jeffers's poetry. Everson registered as an anarchist and a pacifist with his draft board in compliance with the 1940 draft bill. In 1943 he was sent to a Civilian Public Service CPS work camp for conscientious objectors in Oregon. As such they read at times not unlike proto-L=A=N-G=U=A=G=E verse by way of concrete poetry. Titles like "Vector Space" "Debug" "Big Bang Theory" "Matrix Cross Product "Null Space" and "Binary Gulch" show the clear influence of science while others "Paperclip Consciousness" "Cubicle Truth" allude to office-work and even the counterculture "The Redneck and the Hippie". Throughout the voice is an original one an unusual confluence of logic earnestness and experimentation. Lelle deploys symbolic logic unusual computer punctuation and linguistic playfulness including Unconventional Dickensonian Capitalization to strangely accomplished effect buoyed in no small part by the presentation: a period monospaced font that evokes computer printers and office electric typewriters lending the entire production the intentionality of an artist's book. Permeating his work is pride in the African-American identity and its diverse culture. Hughes stressed a racial consciousness and cultural nationalism devoid of self-hate. His thought united people of African descent and Africa across the globe to encourage pride in their diverse black folk culture and black aesthetic. Hughes was one of the few prominent black writers to champion racial consciousness as a source of inspiration for black artists. His African-American race consciousness and cultural nationalism would influence many foreign black writers including Jacques Roumain Nicolás GuillénLéopold Sédar Senghor and Aimé Césaire. Along with the works of Senghor Césaire and other French-speaking writers of Africa and of African descent from the Caribbean such as René Maran fromMartinique and Léon Damas from French Guiana in South America the works of Hughes helped to inspire the Négritude movement in France. A radical black self-examination was emphasized in the face of European colonialism. In addition to his example in social attitudes Hughes had an important technical influence by his emphasis on folk and jazz rhythms as the basis of his poetry of racial pride. It was written after Updike read the single topic Sept. 1967 Scientific American devoted to "Materials". The poem is dated December 3 1967 but was published by their Angel Hair imprint in 1968. Folio 14 inches / 35.7 cm 4 unnumbered leaves in stapled printed wrappers featuring a beautiful cover illustration by George Schneeman who often collaborated with New York School poets. Pages lightly toned some soiling to the covers half-inch tear and some rippling to the rear cover page. A Very Good copy. OCLC WorldCat lists 21 institutional holdings of this edition. Corinth reprinted Giant Night in 1970; that edition is readily obtainable. This true first edition though is very scarce to the market especially in acceptable collectible condition. One of Merrill's early poems was included in an issue of this publication.
