"C Comics" was notable for Brainard's artistic collaborations with poet friends. <br /><br />In this issue Brainard has drawn comics for texts supplied by a veritable Who's Who of New York School poets: Frank O'Hara John Ashbery Barbara Guest Bill Berkson Ron Padgett Kenward Elmslie Frank Lima Kenneth Koch Peter Schjeldahl Dick Gallup Tony Towle and Brainard himself with texts of "advertisements" supplied by Jimmy Schuyler. The feature item of the archive is a binder of over 50 typescript poems with occasional pencil notations and corrections in what we presume to be Gilliland's hand accompanied by a typed and incomplete List of Publications. Given that several of the poems were typed on the blank verso of her husband's life insurance office stationery it seems likely that these were Mrs. Gilland's personal collection comprised of both published and apparently unpublished poems. Also included is a copy of Indiana Poets: An Anthology of 48 Living Writers New York: Henry Harrison 1935 in which Gilliland is one of the featured 48 writers; 20 issues of various poetry magazines one duplicate containing publications of her poetry; and two b/w photographs one of which is identified as a portrait of the author. Mary Winona Gilliland lived in Indianapolis most of her life graduating from Tudor Hall and then DePauw University before marrying Robert V. Gilliland in 1915. She was published in The American Mercury Poetry Kaleidograph Indiana Poetry Magazine Weird Tales Bozart Westward Better Homes and Gardens Wings and the 1937 issue of American Women Poets among other magazines and was invited to join the Poetry Society of America in 1937. Slight sunning near the spine and a bit of handling wear else clean and bright. A Near Fine copy. INSCRIBED by Joe Brainard on the title page: "For Ann and Ken with / LOVE / Joe." This warm inscription was for Ann and Ken Mikolowski founders of the Alternative Press. Brainard 1942-1994 was a regular contributor to the Mikolowskis' publications which consisted of letterpress-printed mail art. A nice association. The Friendly Way originally appeared in 1972 typewritten and mimeographed by Siamese Banana Press of New York. In 1991 Proper Tales Press of Toronto issued what it termed this "resurrected" edition of 200 copies featuring Brainard's quirky short takes on life. Example: "I figure the world will give me just about what I deserve." Cover art by Brainard of course. A scarce publication one that's especially elusive when inscribed by Brainard. A warm and significant association. Padgett b. 1942 introduced Schneeman to the New York scene when Schneeman and his family moved to the city from Italy in the 1960s. Schneeman 1934-2009 regularly collaborated with poets and writers of the New York School illustrating their books magazines and broadsides. "In Advance of the Broken Arm" is Padgett's debut collection of poems published by Ted Berrigan's C Press. This copy is the second edition after the 1964 edition one of 200 numbered copies this being #140. Edited by Ted Berrigan cover and drawings by Joe Brainard. 4to 11 x 8 1/2 inches / 280 x 216 mm 34 mimeographed pages in side-stapled wrappers. Light edge wear toning and soiling to the covers else bright and sound. A Very Good or better copy representing a collaboration by some of the leading members of the New York School. This volume is letter I of 26 special copies signed by Warsh 1944-2020 and Schneeman 1934-2009; there also was a trade edition of 500 copies. There are two very widely known quotations in the play; from the opening to the play: Music has charms to soothe a savage breast The word "breast" is often misquoted as "beast" and "has" sometimes appears as "hath". Also often repeated is a quotation of Zara in Act III Scene VIII: Heav'n has no rage like love to hatred turn'd Nor hell a fury like a woman scorn'd. Eberhart dated his inscription at the bottom of the page as was his custom "November 1984" and also wrote "see back page" with an arrow. On the back page Eberhart has written a 125 word note that reads as a response to the inscrptee's question. "I do recall Tennyson's 'The Eagle' but should look it up." Eberhart then reminisces about his introduction to writing poetry. "I want to tell you that when I was fifteen. our teacher asked the class to write a poem. I went home and found in the family library the poems of Alfred Lord Tennyson. I fell excitedly under their spell because of the musicality of his verse and the perfection of his rhymes . it was as enthralling as running the hundred yard dash. So I got my start with Tennyson. " Dated "11/15/84." The content of this reminiscence with many similar sentences appeared the following year in "A Celebration of Teachers" 1985: 14-15 published by the NCTE and reprinted in "Negative Capability." Vol.VI nos II & III. That issue inscribed by Eberhart on the title to the same person is included in this lot.
