Printing/type to recto only. 10-15/16" x 8-7-16" <br/><br/>Typed poem with "Copy" noted in manuscript beneath the letterhead though nevertheless presumed original to the occasion. The poem is addressed to William and Mrs. I. Schaffer from "Your Broncho Friend of the Camp and the Trail J.W. Crawford 'Capt. Jack.'" Crawford and the Schaffers apparently met and spent time together at Yama Farms. The poem consists of two octaves and begins "To a pair of Happy Lovers / Whom I met at Yama Farms / Who are dead in love with Lovers / Of Old Mother Nature's charms . . . " We presume that the author is "Poet Scout" John Wallace "Captain Jack" Crawford. Crawford was a soldier and ranger in the West during the Civil War a failed miner a showman in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show until 1877 when he accidentally shot himself in the groin and an eventual lecturer and cowboy poet at events around the country; he died in New York in 1917. Yama Farms was a popular Japanese-inspired resort in Ulster County New York from 1903 to 1938. It hosted among others Henry Ford Thomas Edison John Burroughs Harvey Firestone Rabindranath Tagore and many other industrialists financiers influential members of New York society literati etc. unknown books

The recipients were John Bernard Myers publisher of the Tiber Press and founder of the Tibor de Nagy Gallery in New York and his companion Herbert Machiz a theatrical director. <br /><br />Myers championed many New York poets of the 1950s and published early works by Frank O'Hara John Ashbery Kenneth Koch and many others either in separate editions or through his poetry journal Semi-Colon. One of Merrill's early poems was included in an issue of this publication. The reference is to Amiri Baraka known as LeRoi Jones until 1965 whose Totem Press published the book as Blue Plate #2 in an edition of 750 copies. Besides Targ a previous owner of this book was poet Tony Weinberger; his signature is at top of the title page. Nice literary associations here.<br /><p>Michael McClure who was instrumental in launching the Beat movement died on May 4 2020 at age 87. McClure took part in a legendary poetry reading at the Six Gallery in San Francisco in October 1955. Other readers were Allen Ginsberg who read an early version of Howl Philip Lamantia Gary Snyder and Philip Whalen with Kenneth Rexroth acting as master of ceremonies.</p>CONDITION: Light soiling to wrappers heavy toning to title page and colophon. Mesens on the half title to French Surrealist artist and poet Georges Hugnet: "À Georges Hugnet / très cordialement / Mesens / décembre 1933." A wonderful association between two Surrealists. <br /><br />This alphabet book written entirely in French features short poems or phrases following each letter of the alphabet. Paul Éluard has written a preface while the frontispiece collage is by Mesens himself. One of 500 numbered copies printed on Featherweight vélin following 3 copies on Japon nacré and 13 on Hollande van Gelder. Mesens founded the publisher Éditions Nicolas Flamel and named it after the medieval scribe and manuscript seller. <br /><br />"There can be no doubt that <i>Alphabet sourd aveugle</i> is the key work in Mesens's literary oeuvre" writes Erich Weiss. "It took Mesens only two days to compose the twenty-six poems of his alphabet during a story stay at the Edith Cavell Hospital in Ukkel in August 1930." He goes on to say: "With regard to typography and layout the work is truly pioneering." Erich Weiss in "<i>The Star Alphabet by E.L.T.
