L'edizione critica dà ragione del lavoro di Carducci tracciando in primo luogo la storia del progressivo aggregarsi dei "Giambi ed epodi", che, oltre le pubblicazioni singole, compaiono inizialmente in raccolte diverse, per confluire infine in un volume autonomo. Si arriva così a delineare il testo critico, che è corredato delle varianti a stampa e note metriche, mentre le testimonianze autografe, per la loro ricchezza e complessità, sono raccolte in una sezione a parte, componimento per componimento. Per ciascuno di questi viene tracciata la storia poetica, dando insieme ragione dell'occasione e dell'avantesto. L'epistolario carducciano costituisce uno strumento prezioso in questa ricostruzione, insieme agli autografi. Il lavoro di comparazione di tali testimonianze permette di seguire il processo compositivo entrando nelle sue motivazioni e nel suo contesto, ed in esso si può leggere un ampio periodo della storia poetica e personale di Carducci. Grazie a queste testimonianze è possibile districare situazioni autografe anche complesse, e seguire un work in progress carducciano a volte lineare, a volte tormentato, che interseca materiali e tempi.
