Although Article VI of the Constitution of the United States declares that "no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States" at the federal level many states continued to prevent Jews Catholics and Quakers from occupying public offices. Beginning as early as 1797 Jewish citizens of Maryland led by Jewish leaders Solomon Etting and Jacob Cohen had regularly but unsuccessfully petitioned the legislature for equal status. The "Jew Bill" as it came to be known was defeated in 1802 1804 1819 and 1823. In 1824 led by Irish Catholic Thomas Kennedy and with a Democrat majority in the legislature the Jew Bill was once again brought before the legislature passing at the beginning of 1826. <br /> <br /> The present volumes recording the laws passed by the General Assembly at those sessions include both the proposed law - that "every citizen of this state professing the Jewish religion . appointed to any office of public trust shall make and subscribe a declaration of his belief in a future state of rewards and punishments in the stead of the declaration now required." - and the final vote of passage on January 5 1826 ensuring to Jews the same rights and privileges as Christians in the state. <br /> <br /> An important record of a seminal moment in Jewish American history. 1889146767London: Abraham J. Lev & Co.; John Snow & Co. 1889-90. First and only editions of the first two years of Reverend Isaac's periodical for the Jewish people gathering issues from May 1889 to December 1890. This rare publication includes the complete story of "The Star of Peace" by "Ben Abram" in which the adventures of Isaac Da Costa in Jamaica and in England were those of Isaacs's own father. We were unable to trace any copy in commerce and only six in institutions; Library Hub locates three copies only Edinburgh UCL BL and WorldCat adds a further three Harvard Hebrew Union College National Library of Israel. The Everlasting Nation was published between 1889 and 1892 and comprised four volumes in total. "There is no periodical in existence which professes to start from the stand-point and to comprehend a like variety of topics as those which are enumerated in the Programme of 'The Everlasting Nation'. The magazines which are connected with existing missionary work are necessarily of a missionary character. But here our attitude is that of the Hebrew-Christian" introduction. Albert Augustus Isaacs 1826-1903 was a 19th-century historian and anthropologist specializing in the history of the Middle-Eastern Jewish and Arabic people. His travels familiarized him with Palestine and he wrote among others The Dead Sea 1857 and A Pictorial Tour in the Holy Land 1858 which is illustrated with the many photographs he took himself. Born and baptised into the Church of England in Jamaica Isaacs was of Jewish parentage and "throughout his long life he identified himself with every movement for the welfare of his brethren according to the flesh. In 1866 he was appointed by Lord Berners vicar of Christ Church Leicester in his old diocese of Peterborough where for more than 25 years he laboured in season and out of season carrying on his ministry on staunch Protestant and evangelical lines and being surrounded by a large band of fellow-workers who heartily appreciated his teaching and work. Mr. Isaacs was known as 'the Jew of Leicester' and continued his great interest in all efforts for the conversion of his brethren to Christianity" Bernstein. 2 vols octavo. 1 plate occasional in-text illustration decorative initials. 188232820516<p>5 x 8 1/2 in . 4pp. Very good.</p><p><b>This is the rare original announcement and program for a major early benefit concert supporting Jewish refugees from Russia. </b>The pogroms carried out in 1881-82 drove countless Russian Jews to the West. This era marks the beginning of the period of the greatest Jewish immigration to the United States.</p><p>The concert was held at Mechanics Hall in Boston in 1882. The featured conductors are Carl Zerrahn and George Henschel. Henschel had become the first conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra a year earlier. Here he leverages his position to support Jewish refugees.</p><p>"Beginning in the 1880s a much larger wave of Jewish immigrants arrived in Boston from the Pale of Settlement in Russia and Eastern Europe. During the nineteenth century the Russian czars had confined Jews to this region and subjected them to religious persecution expulsions and forced military conscription. Passage of the May Laws in the 1880s made matters worse by forbidding Jews from owning or renting land outside of towns or cities and limiting their access to education. From 1881-1883 and again in the early twentieth century Jews were also targeted in violent riots or "pogroms" that left thousand dead and caused many more to flee" Boston College 2018.</p><p>The concert program includes pieces by Jewish composers or with Jewish themes including selections from from Mendelssohn's <i>Elijah</i> Handel's <i>Samson</i> and Henschel's "There was an Ancient King" sung by Henschel himself the finest baritone of his day. The performance concludes with Handel's "Hallelujah" chorus performed by the Salem Oratorio Society and the Lynn Choral Union.</p><p>The conductor featured in this program Sir Isidor George Henschel 1850-1934 was a German-born Jewish baritone pianist conductor and composer. He became the first conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1881. On his appointment he sent his ideas for an innovative seating chart to his close friend Johannes Brahms who replied in an approving letter of mid-November 1881.</p><p><b>Very rare. Very Good.<br /> <br /> Kestenbaum calls this the "First printing of a Charter and official incorporation of a synagogue in America." The pamphlet prints the "Constitution" which is evidently considered the "Charter." Official certifications by the Commonwealth Attorney General Judges of the Supreme Court the Governor and the Secretary all printed here affirm the validity and recording of this "written instrument." <br /> The pamphlet begins with the Congregation's constitution and interspersed Hebrew text. This was a Sephardic congregation. "The fixed prayers shall always be read in the original Hebrew language according to the custom of the Portuguese Jews." The membership included prominent Philadelphia Jewish families: Gratz Phillips Levy Cohen De Cordova Pollok Seixas and others. Bye-Laws are printed at pages 14-24. <br /> Rosenbach 262. Born into a distinguished Jewish family Russell was a great-nephew of Chief Rabbi Solomon Hirschell. The composer lived in the United States from 1835 to 1841 whereupon he returned to England and spent the remainder of his artistic career producing musical extravaganzas. The present song is one of many instances of collaboration between lyricist Charles Mackay and musical composer Henry Russell. Other songs of theirs are: "There's a Good Time Coming" "Cheer Boys Cheer" and "To the West." <br /> "Mordecai Manuel Noah 1785-1851 was one of the most important figures of his time. He was a person of many accomplishments: lawyer newspaper editor playwright diplomat politician judge and major activist for Jewish causes. Noah commanded the respect of four U. S. Presidents: Adams Madison Jefferson and Jackson.
