Also includes, Pennsylvania Dutch Folk Art and Architecture, and Kingston to Newson to Blake. Includes facsimile of a beautiful Hebrew book from Naples. The Jews in Italy, Spain and Portugal were the first to make use of the newly-invented art of Gutenberg for the production of Hebrew books. Hebrew printing presses were set up in various parts of those countries, and produced virtually all known Hebrew books printed during the fifteenth century. Naples, the largest and most beautiful city of Lower Italy, became an early and quite important center of Hebrew printing, second only to Soncino, even as it had become a large center of Jewish life. Though of short duration, the Neapolitan was perhaps the most cosmopolitan Jewish community in the fifteenth century. With the exception of Soncino, none of the cities in Spain, Portugal or Italy can claim the production of as many Hebrew incunabula as were printed in Naples in less than a decade. Orah! : A Call to the American Orthodox, by Rabbi Pinchas Teitz (1908-1995) , an influential orthodox American rabbi, who came to America in 1933, and was instrumental in founding the modern Torah community in Elizabeth, NJ, where two mikvaos, three schools, and five shuls form a united JEC, Jewish Educational Center. Seeing a need for a national awakening of Orthodox Jewry in America, he published in Elul 5696 (1936) the first of a series of booklets entitled Urah Awaken as a call to teshuva. (Jewish Observer, June 1996, An Appreciation of Rabbi Mordechai Pinchas Teitz zt"l by Rabbi Yaakov M. Dombroff) Rabbi Teitz was famous for his Yiddish radio broadcasts, and for his 22 visits to the Soviet Union to help preserve and renew the religious jewish communities there. He served there as a rabbi and, after immigrating to America in 1854, in Richmond, Charleston, Augusta, New Orleans and New York (Bnai Jeshurun) . He was the first president of the Board of Jewish Ministers and the vice president of the New York chapter of the Alliance Israelite Universelle. He died in 1893. (Goldman) . A committee dedicated to recording the fate of Polish Jews published this book length poem by Simkhah Szajewics. Written in the Lodz Ghetto, it appeared immediately after the war in 1946; Szajewicz perished in a concentration camp in 1944" (from the permanent exhibit at the National Yiddish Book Center, which houses their copy in their Rare Book Collection).
