On the front endpaper is the inscription "For Uncle Trevor Xmas 1932 from Mervyn" we have corresponded with Sebastian Peake and in turn with his brother on the attribution of this inscription to his father the noted late author Mervyn Peake of Gormenghast Trilogy fame Mervyn Laurence Peake 1911-1968 English modernist writer artist poet and illustrator-the gist of our exchange has been that this may very well be Mr. Peake's inscription the handwriting is very similar and that there were many relations of the old family and it is also significant that Mervyn Peake and his wife owned other Virginia Woolf titles. We gratefully acknowledge with thanks the help of the Peake family on researching this interesting and unusual inscription written when Peake would have been about 21 years of age and are happy to provide copies of this correspondence to prospective owners of the book. Very good with some toning to edges front wrapper with small light stain at spine and a ½" closed tear to top edge some light soiling to wrappers overall and rear wrapper with some residue staples rusting slightly interior with some foxing. Overall a pleasing copy in original wrappers of a scarce and early work of Woolf which is also an early publication of her Hogarth Press. Kirkpatrick A2b Woolmer 8. This publication is erroneously designated as the second edition but it is truly the first separate edition of Woolf's story The Mark on the Wall which was first published in Two Stories in 1917 alongside Leonard Woolf's Three Jews. Two Stories was the first publication of the Woolfs' Hogarth Press and was printed by the Woolfs themselves on a hand-press in a run of 150 copies see Woolmer 1 Kirkpatrick A2a. Demand for orders soon overwhelmed what the small press could produce so the Woolfs had the 1000 copies of this edition printed at the Pelican Press in East London. First Separate. Original Wraps. 20633TWAIN MARK Clemens S. L. Woolf Samuel Johnson. MARK TWAIN LITHOGRAPH. n.p. n.d. but late 1919 or early 1920 18 1/2 x 13 1/2 inches; image size 11 x 14 inches and signed by Woolf in lower right margin in pencil. Original lithograph portrait of Twain drawn in 1906 and first printed in this form in 1919 or 1920 and said to be one of just fifty copies printed. Woolf painted Twain's portrait in 1906 it was rejected by the family and is now at the Hartford Memorial cut down from its original size. He drew this far more charming sketch at that same sitting. Woolf tells the fullest story of his experience in THE TWAINIAN number IV June 1945 but Tenney cites several articles and books by Woolf where this encounter is described. This drawing much reduced in size was used as the frontispiece to his autobiography DRAWN FROM LIFE 1932. Woolf's impression of Twain was not entirely positive and he described Isabel Lyon Twain's secretary and sometime suspected mistress as an overly protective sycophant who laughed at Twain's jokes even before he finished telling them. unknown books
