The Ottoman Army consisted only of Muslim men and war caused the death of one and a half million Muslim Ottoman men. The heavy losses of the Ottoman army meant that every day more and more dependants lost their breadwinners. When the breadwinner had gone to war, was wounded or died at the front; the wives, daughters, sisters and mothers they had left behind were faced with two options: to find work and make a living, or to starve to death. On 14 August 1916, the Committee of Union and Progress (Ittihâd ve Terakkî Cemiyeti), the ruling party of the Ottoman Empire, established a new society under the leadership of one of its leading figures: Vice-Commander and Minister of War, Enver Pasa. The Society for the Employment of Ottoman Muslim Women (Kadinlari Çalistirma Cemiyet-i Islâmiyesi) was a Unionist organization created to find employment for Muslim Ottoman women who were in urgent economic need. Within a matter of months, it received more than 14,000 applications and was soon employing 8,194 destitute Ottoman women in its braches and in the related state and military institutions. In time, it would offer jobs to an aggregate number of 20,000 women workers, and became the leading employer of Muslim Ottoman women in the Ottoman Empire. This comprehensive work constitutes both a case study of Muslim Ottoman women during World War I, and a detailed analysis of the foundation, organization and activities of the Society for the Employment of Ottoman Muslim Women, created to find employment for them.

Very Good Turkish Original wrappers. Foolscap 8vo. (17,5 x 12 cm). In Turkish. 128 p., one plate of Fatma Hanim who was the deceased wife of the poet to whom the poem is dedicated. First edition in Latin letters of this second book of poems of "Sâîr-i Âzâm" [i.e. The great poet], which is considered one of the greatest works of Turkish literature, and was published with appendices and a dictionary at the end, along with its transcription by doctor and politician Sadi Irmak (1904-1990). First published in 1885 in Arabic letters, Makber is a poem written by Abdülhak Hamit Tarhan on the loss of his wife, Fatima Hanim. It took its place as one of the most important examples of the newly established Ottoman / Turkish Poetry in Western style in those years, and has been a source of inspiration for many Turkish poets even decades after it was written. It is the first poem that brings the metaphysical fear of death to Turkish poetry. In 1878, his first brush with controversy occurred on the publishing of his play Nesteren in Paris. It depicted a rebellion against a tyrannical ruler, and the actual ruler of Turkey at that time, Sultan Abdul Hamid II was so upset by it that he had the playwright fired from his government job. He was appointed in 1881 to Poti, Georgia, in 1882 to Volos, Greece and in 1883 to Bombay, India. Due to illness of his wife, the family left India in 1885. On their way to Istanbul, his wife Fatma died in Beirut, then in the Ottoman Empire. She was buried there that inspired him to write his poem Makber (The Grave), which later became very popular.

Marie-Madeleine-Gabrielle de Rochechouart de Mortemart (1670-1704), abbesse de Fontevraud, sœur de Madame de Montespan, à qui elle dû sans doute sa nomination, elle conserva malgré la disgrâce de cette dernière la confiance du Roi Soleil qui l'estimait particulièrement, au point de la surnommer "Reine des abbesses". Elle entretint, toute sa vie, une riche correspondance avec les plus brillants esprits de son siècle (le Père Rapin, Boileau, Racine, Mignard, Madame de La Fayette, etc).

Ce document présentait une liste des personnages du roman en les identifiant à des individus ayant vécu au XVIIe siècle. Cyrus y devenait le prince de Condé, Mandane était Madame de Longueville, etc. La clé ne s’arrêtait pas aux personnages, mais permettait aussi d’identifier un certain nombre de lieux mentionnés dans le texte - d'où l'importance de la question des clés pour les topographies, ainsi que pour les gravures qui ornent l'ouvrage (voir Frontispices et lecture à clefs)" (Cabeen, 407). Bon exemplaire, relié à l'époque.
