New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 248 p. Essays on Ottoman historians and historiography. Ottoman historians also shared a common attribute as social critics, never shirking their perceived duty to protect the sultan's reputation by condemning the misdeeds of wrongdoers and contraveners of the best traditions of ethical behavior and good governance, even when these misdeeds issued from the top ranks of Ottoman society. For them corporate or class solidarity was far less important than an unswerving commitment to shared values and principles and a reformist spirit is clearly detectible in their writing. It is clear that in addition to their devotion to literary pursuits and achievements Ottoman historians took their advisory role very seriously. This collection of essays is presented in the hope that it will contribute to a better understanding of the unique blend of praise, eulogy and panegyric with hard-hitting social criticism, realism and reformist ideals that typifies the Ottoman historical opus. It is offered not as a definitive or would-be authoritative statement on a subject as boundless and many faceted as Ottoman historical thought but with the desire to stimulate further reflection and to serve as a potential source of inspiration for future generations of students pursuing new lines of inquiry into the thought world and spiritual essence of the Ottomans in a bygone imperial age.

The origin of the Turkish press in Bulgaria goes back to the Ottoman period. In 1865 a provincial printinghouse was founded by Midhat Pasaha at Roustchouk (Russe), the capital of the Danube province of the Ottoman Empire, now the north part of Bulgaria. The same year the first Turkish newspaper named Tuna (Danube) was published in the same place. This paper was closed on the day of Russian occupation, 13th of June 1877. In 1867 a magazine in Turkish called Mecra-i Efkâr (Stream of Opinions), and then in 1875 a bilingual newspaper named Günes / Soleil were published in Russe. Also other publications in Turkish and Bulgarian were printed in the Danube province printinghouse.

Of the various monopolies exercised by the Ottoman ruling stratum in their long domination over South-eastern Europe, the most lasting in its effects was their monopoly over information. The scanty knowledge that outsiders had of this area improved only in the nineteenth century as, one after another, the Balkan nations regained independence and, with it, their identities. Well into the twentieth century, historians made do with very incomplete information about the period prior to the national revivals of the last century. The result was a tendency to offer disturbingly impoverished and flattened views of provincial life under Ottoman rule, inviting doctrinaire distortions of these eclipsed centuries. In this book, originally published in 1982, Bruce McGowan presents material concerning this neglected area. His painstaking study of Ottoman records provides convincing analyses of economic, fiscal and demographic questions fundamental to our understanding of the region.

The Croats are a Balkanic nation with a Slavic language. The issue of their origin has been subject to hard debates, but their roots are still "officially" not known. This book offers a new theory, well established in contrary to the others, about who the first Croats were, by explaining how a Turkic tribe disappeared in the north of the Caucasus and appeared in the south of Poland. This study includes also many new ideas about Proto-Hungarian, Proto-Bulgarian, Proto-Serbian, as well as Bosnian and Khazar histories.

New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. In English. 295 p. This book aims to generate a set of ideas on the East West relations through the prisms of academics and intellectuals from Turkey and Bosnia Herzegovina, who had exchanged and discussed their ideas in a conference titled as "The Conference on East West Relations: Past, Present and Future." The Conference was jointly organized by Ramazan Gözen on behalf of the Ankara Center for Thought and Research Center (ADAM) and Ertugrul Tacgin on behalf of the Inter national University of Sarajevo (IUS), and held in the IUS, Sarajevo, on 14-15 February 2008 with a grant from Turkish International Co operation and Development Agency (TIKA). A set of related issues were discussed from different academic perspectives in two panels and four sessions. The first panel focused on historical and contemporary perspectives or the East-West relations, and the second panel on Bosnia Herzegovina's and Turkey's relations with the European Union, focusing on their integration and membership processes. To this end, the Conference brought together representatives from academia, business community, government, specialized NGOs and think tanks from the region. The book includes 15 chapters which are divided into three subject areas: History, International Politics, and Economics.

Images of our time: Works from the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo.= Günümüz imgeleri: Saraybosna Güzel Sanatlar Akademisi'nden yapitlar. [Exhibition catalogue]. The Academy of Fine Arts at the University of Sarajevo was founded in 1972 as the first Academy of Fine Arts in Bosnia and Herzegovina and became one of the forerunners in Bosnian contemporary art. An openness for diverse artistic poetics, a departure from strict academism, flexibility of curricula in interaction with the wider social community, synergy between traditional design knowledge and skills and new media challenges have all led the numerous graduates from the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo to become recognised artists, designers and professors throughout the world. The exhibition catalogue presents an essay by curator Aida Abadzic Hodzic discussing the contemporary interpretations of Bosnian young artists and works in various media created by undergraduate and graduate students, as well as graduates of the six faculties of the academy, including painting, sculpture, art education, printmaking, graphic and product design. The works survey contemporary art in Bosnia Herzegovina and offers comments and reflections by its young artists on the history, and social, political, economic and cultural issues of the country.
