Overall a good copy. The Dukagjini were an Albanian feudal noble family. They may have been relatives or descendants of the earlier Progoni, who founded the first Albanian state in recorded history, the Principality of Arbanon. Their domain extended from northern Albania to western Kosovo. The city of Lezhe was its most important holding. The Dukagjini evolved from an extended clan (farefisni) to a feudal family in the late 13th century, when their first known progenitor Gjin Tanushi who became known as a dux (duke) and thus his descendants took the surname Dukagjini. By the early 15th century, they had evolved in one of the most important feudal families in the country. After the Ottoman conquest of Albania, a branch of them found refuge and settled in Venetian Koper, where they became known as the Docaini family which held the governorship of the town until the early 17th century, when the last male line Docaini died. Another branch, converted to Islam from Catholic Christianity and remained in the Ottoman Empire, where they reached the high ranks of Ottoman leadership and produced many governors (pashas) in the Middle East, where descendants of them live in the modern period. Basri Bey, together with names such as Enver Bey and Kazim Karabekir, he was among the founders of the Manastir organization of the Union and Progress Society, which played an important role in the declaration of the Constitutional Monarchy. Basri Bey went to the opposition ranks with the claim that the Unionists, whom he thought was under the influence of a small clique, were moving away from the reforms and ideals, and expressed heavy criticism against them. Albania and the Ottoman Empire are important in terms of witnessing firsthand the approach of the Unionists on the eve of the Balkan War and Albanian independence, as well as the world of feelings and thoughts of the people of the region and especially the rebel Albanians. In this book, Basri Bey explained his thoughts on the nature of the Albanian revolt and the motives of the rebels against the Ottoman Empire.

Fine English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 350, [1] p. Inventory of Ottoman Turkish documents about waqf preserved in the Oriental Department at the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library. Pt. 1: Registers. This inventory was compiled owing to the joint efforts of three senior researchers Evgeni Radushev, Svetlana Ivanova, and Rumen Kovachev. They carried our the study for the present inventory by focusing on the registers and series of waqf documents compiled in the form of destes or quires of documents and two specialized kad¿ waqf sicills. The single documents, which Prof. L. Fekete calls ¿loose sheets¿ will be included in a second volume of the Inventory. A detailed annotation is given for each archival unit that is listed. The data contained in the registers informs us especially about the location of the land waqfs in the Balkans and Anatolia, their founders, the types of waqf properties, toponyms and onomastics, the salaries of waqf functionaries, market prices and the enterprises of various waqfs, depicting a detailed picture of the Ottoman Empire and providing information about problems which have not been formerly dealt with. This inventory includes 472 documents only from the funds of the Oriental Department at the National Library in Sofia. They are written primarily in Ottoman, while several archival units are in Arabic. Chronologically they range between the 15th and the 20th centuries. The documents are arranged in a chronological order. This volume contains an index of the personal names of the founders, trustees of waqfs as well as some of the officers. The biographical information is significant for local history as well as the ¿inner¿ history of the empire. This index also contains short lives of military commanders, religious functionaries, sultans¿ wives, eunuchs, etc. The index of geographic places identifies Ottoman and modern names of villages and mahalles. Then come the subject matter index and the glossary of terms. The glossary includes useful information for all researchers of Ottoman history. The present inventory sheds light upon one of the significant subjects of Ottoman social and economic history on the basis of first hand archival documents.

New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. [xLiii], 331 p. War, epidemics and medicine in the late Ottoman Empire, (1912-1918). The Ottoman Empire spent its last century with wars coming one after another and as a consequence had to suffer many physical as well as demographic casualties. With a significant decrease in the population, one of the main factors that had kept the Empire up disappeared and therefore the 600 year-old Empire collapsed at the end of the First World War. This study focuses on the period of Balkan Wars and the First World War, which affected the political history of the 20th century deeply and caused the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, and examines the concerned period in terms of the epidemic diseases. Taking into account that wars are important contributors in the emergence of epidemic diseases, I have attempted to evaluate the destruction caused by the epidemic diseases during the war years and effects of these diseases on the results of the wars in a historical framework.
