Die Königspaläste zählen seit 1985 zum Weltkulturerbe, einige der Reliefs sind bis heute verschwunden. Das Königreich Dahomey fiel 1892 an Frankreich und wurde Teil von Französisch-Westafrika, später entstand hieraus der Staat Benin. Seltene Ansichtskarte eines Verlags aus der deutschen Kolonialzeit!

Il volume, risultato di un lungo periodo di ricerche d'archivio e sul campo condotte in Ghana, raccoglie voci e storie femminili lungo un periodo che va dall'ultimo quarto dell'Ottocento ai giorni nostri. Intersecando la dimensione politico-economica con quella storico-sociale e ancora con quella di genere, il libro parte dall'analisi di un fenomeno di migrazione interna, che coinvolge soprattutto le giovani donne, e ritorna agli anni dell'abolizione della schiavitù, per soffermarsi sui primi decenni del Novecento coloniale. L'obiettivo è comprendere alcune delle ragioni della continuità tra la marginalità contemporanea e le forme di sfruttamento passate, di volta in volta evidenziando il persistere di pratiche e strutture di dipendenza e asservimento, in una continua tensione tra forme di agentività personale e di assoggettamento.

Der zeitgenössische afrikanische Voodoo, mit einer Gruppe von Figuren ebenfalls in dieser Ausstellung vertreten, veranschaulicht, daß die Problematik des Kolonialismus heute weitgehend integriert und aufgelöst zu sein scheint. So ist die Colonisation der Skulptur in Afrika nicht etwa das Ergebnis der kulturellen, geistigen und territorialen Expansion Europas, also keine originäre Leistung der Kolonisatoren, sondern vielmehr eine eigenständige Leistung der Kolonisierten vor dem Hintergrund ihrer Tradition - ein Ergebnis, das dem Europäer zwar nicht mit Satire, wohl aber mit Ironie entgegentritt. Es bleiben uns Erstaunen, Würdigung, Versuche der Deutung, und bei gewissenhafter Prüfung die Feststellung der Fremdheit afrikanischer colon-Figuren. - Jens Jahn (Einleitung)
