Koloß / Völkerkundemuseum Berlin. - Die Sammlung von Gewichten und Zubehör zum Wiegen von Gold im Museum für Völkerkunde Berlin umfaßt zur Zeit 1309 Gegenstände, die in der Zeit zwischen 1849 und 1967, fast ausnahmslos im Gebiet des heutigen Ghana, zusammengetragen worden sind. Der besondere Wert der vergleichsweise kleinen Berliner Sammlung liegt darin, daß sie zum größeren Teil bereits zum Bestand des Museums gehörte, ehe die Fabrikation von Pseudo-Gold-gewichten für den Kunstmarkt begonnen hatte. Auch die in den letzten Jahren in Ghana erworbenen Ergänzungen sind als authentisch anzusehen, da nicht-figürliche Gewichte ihres geringen Handelswertes wegen bisher nicht nachgeahmt werden. Die Dokumentation, auch der Sammlungen aus erster Hand, ist unzureichend; sie beschränkt sich in den meisten Fällen auf die Herkunftsangabe "Ashanti" oder "Goldküste" und die Bezeichnung "Goldgewicht". Für diese Erstveröffentlichung der Berliner Sammlung wurde deshalb der Versuch unternommen, die Bedeutung der geometrischen und figürlichen Goldgewichte nachträglich festzustellen. Für Feldarbeit standen insgesamt sechs Monate (1966/67) zur Verfügung; da nur zehn der Gewichte aus dem Gebiet der Elfenbeinküste stammen sollen, wurde die Untersuchung auf Ghana beschränkt und auf Ashanti konzentriert. Ergänzendes Material wurde in Kwahu und Brong-Ahafo gesammelt. Als Arbeitsunterlagen dienten Photographien aller Goldgewichte der Berliner Sammlung. … (Vorwort) // … Die Miniaturdarstellungen von Menschen, Tieren und Pflanzen, von Geräten und geometrischen Formen, die unter den Metallgüssen der Akan-Völker in großer Vielfalt zu finden sind, werden von Sammlern afrikanischer Kleinkunst sehr geschätzt. Die Bedeutung dieser Kleinplastiken liegt jedoch weniger in ihrer künstlerischen Gestaltung als in ihrer Motivik und Funktion. Die Motive machen sie zu Dokumenten zum Teil erloschener Züge der Akan-Kultur, während ihre Funktion als Gewicht sie mit dem weitverzweigten Netz des Goldhandels verknüpft. Gold aus Westafrika war und ist ein bedeutender Handelsartikel, der heute von Minengesellschaften in hochtechnisierten Verfahren gewonnen wird, während bis gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts das in großer Menge exportierte Gold ausschließlich durch die einheimische Bevölkerung mit einfachen Methoden gewonnen worden war. Jahrhundertelang war der Handel mit den goldreichen Gebieten ein Monopol nordafrikanischer und arabischer Völker, die das Gold gegen eine verhältnismäßig kleine Auswahl von Gütern eintauschten, unter denen Salz, Nutzmetalle, Textilien und Schmuck die dominierende Rolle spielten. Anderen Interessenten war die Benutzung der Handelsstraßen verwehrt. Die Suche nach einem freien Zugang zu den Goldgebieten war der Anstoß zu den Entdeckungsfahrten entlang der Westküste Afrikas, die vom 15.Jahrhundert an den Portugiesen, später vor allem Holländern und Engländern das begehrte Metall einbrachten. Die Auswahl der Waren, die im Guinea-Handel Bedeutung hatten, entsprach im wesentlichen den Gütern, die durch den Transsahara-Handel in Westafrika bekannt und gefragt waren. Der sich lebhaft entwickelnde Handel lag zuerst ganz in den Händen der Küstenstämme, später wurde er weitgehend von den immer stärker werdenden Inlandvölkern übernommen, deren Könige Beauftragte in den Niederlassungen an der Küste hatten. … (Einleitung)

So ist die Colonisation der Skulptur in Afrika nicht etwa das Ergebnis der kulturellen, geistigen und territorialen Expansion Europas, also keine originäre Leistung der Kolonisatoren, sondern vielmehr eine eigenständige Leistung der Kolonisierten vor dem Hintergrund ihrer Tradition - ein Ergebnis, das dem Europäer zwar nicht mit Satire, wohl aber mit Ironie entgegentritt.
