brossura Estate 1940. Le truppe inglesi in Africa settentrionale si scontrano con quelle italiane da poco entrate in guerra. Le armate britanniche hanno urgente bisogno di nuovi aerei per proseguire la guerra nello scacchiere libico-egiziano. Da qui la necessità di una rotta aerea sicura per approvvigionare il fronte: è così aperta la "Takoradi Route". La base di Takoradi, posta in una posizione isolata sulla costa atlantica dell'allora Gold Coast britannica, giocò un ruolo fondamentale anche se poco conosciuto, nella sconfitta delle forze italo-tedesche sul fronte nordafricano. Un considerevole sforzo fu attuato per approntare gli aeroporti, le officine, i magazzini, i depositi di carburante, gli alloggi per il personale, tutto questo per consentire il trasferimento involo degli aeromobili fino al Cairo e, con l'allargarsi del conflitto, anche verso l'Unione Sovietica e l'Estremo Oriente. Gli equipaggi incaricati del trasferimento degli aeromobili dovevano volare per 5800 chilometri lungo una rotta con condizioni climatiche che variavano dall'umido della foresta equatoriale al caldo del deserto centroafricano, superando difficoltà tecniche, malattie tropicali, problemi meteorologici. Tutto questo per consegnare i velivoli loro affidati. Un lavoro logorante ma che si rivelò indispensabile per la vittoria finale.
