Disbound from a larger volume but with original wrappers present map has some uneven toning 1/3 of rear wrapper lacking but still a very good copy overall. Scarce first edition of this pamphlet which was reissued several times and in several languages. According to the Wisconsin Historical Society website "Wisconsin government officials tried to encourage settlers to come to the state several times in the nineteenth century. They employed a commissioner or a formal board of immigration during the years 1852-1855 1867-1887 and 1895-1901. In 1867 Gov. Lucius Fairchild persuaded Milwaukee author Increase Lapham to write this pamphlet to be distributed to prospective immigrants in the eastern states and in Europe. Over the next several years translations and revised editions appeared in German Norwegian French Dutch Swedish and Welsh." Includes sections on rivers and water power climate and health geology and mineral resources agriculture common occupations of residents railroads markets land values and homestead laws schools libraries and more. 1914022505No Place: No publisher 1914. Wraps. Poor. Disbound leaves roughly 8 by 7 inches with a cardstock front cover bearing a label with the student's name and year Marion Conaway 1914. 14 leaves with 12 of the 14 containing a piece of fabric that displays an example of various stitches mostly along hems or seams. The fabric is mounted by metal fasteners. Laid in is a certificate issued in 1918 from the Victory Girls and the United War Work Campaign certifying that Ms. Conaway paid a dollar toward the United War Work Campaign and was deemed an official Victory Girl. This campaign was created as a way for people in the US to support troops during World War I. Presumably the booklet was done for school demonstrating the variety of sewing and stitching techniques that was being taught. POOR condition. Booklet falling apart with all leaves detached and cover detached. Lacking a rear cover. The paper mountings are toned and brittle with some chipping and loss along the edges. The fabrics are clean although some are folded due to mishandling. No publisher unknown
