Bound in brown library buckram; title and shelf number in gilt on the spine; pocket on inside front cover. Hermann Witsius 1636-1708 was a Dutch theologian and a professor of divinity at Franeker 1675 Utrecht 1680 and Leiden 1698. EB11. His Aegyptiaca first printed in 1683 compares the religious rites of the Jews and the Egyptians. He argues against the theory put forth by Sir John Marsham and by John Spencer that Jewish traditions were derived from Egyptian practices. This second edition has been expanded from the first. The paper is watermarked: freestanding rampant lion without crown but we find no similar mark in the literature.Some spots and thumbing throughout binding soiled and slightly worn along the extremities; a good copy. hardcover

Either the 1659 or 1663 edition of Thomas Langley's translation and abridgement of Vergil's De inventoribus rerum. Lacking the title and preliminaries - the 1663 edition was the same as the 1659 but with the title and preliminaries canceled likely this was a leftover that was canceled but not bound up with the new title page the 1663 had no preliminaries. Scattered minor foxing minor old marks short notes underlines and soiling small burn mark in one margin and a tiny hole at the upper right of page 1 trimmed a little close in spots but not obscuring any text. 311 26pp. Size: Octavo 8vo. Also contains the bookplate of James Harrop Dransfield with the quotation "Gutta Cavat Lapidem No Vi Sed Saepe Cadendo." or "</b>A drop of water hollows a stone not by force but by continuously dripping." and it has a Head impaled on a Standing Sword. <b>This is an extremely rare book sold by Calixbooks online. 1672032862London: Matthew Walbancke. Matthew Walbancke and Henry Twyford 1672 A very good copy in largely contemporary binding. In two parts with separate title pages dated 1647 and 1651 respectively. It is suggested that John Selden 1584-1654 is the true author of the work which was then edited by Nathaniel Bacon - whose name is on the title to the Continuation. However this is still a matter of argument. The work was produced originally as the Civil War came to its close and the Commonwealth was established and is written against the royal prerogative. A 'secret' or 'private' edition was produced in 1672 after the restoration of the monarchy. It is stated that 750 copies were produced and many were burnt or otherwise destroyed. The edition has the 2 works in one is dated as for the 1647/51 edition and there are variants of it. Detailed study Joseph A Dane University of Chicago Press suggests that the remnants of 1672 copies were put back together and sections reprinted later. This copy is clearly a 1672 'secret' edition of which parts are likely to be later printings. According to ESTC this copy has the Title page in setting A; Quires B-C are in setting 2; and Quire D in setting b. The binding is full calf with contemporary boards with blind ruled lines and new matching spine with raised bands and title label. Endpapers have been retained with repair and there are some ink numerals to the front and a latin quotation with initials to the verso of the fep.
