A New Voyage to the E Indies' by Pouchot de Chantassin was first published in Paris in 1692.'The Voyages of the Sieur Le Maire to the Canary-Islands Cape Verde Senegal and Gambia' by Joseph-Jacques Le Maire was first published in 1695. Le Maire's work is particularly interesting because of information it provides on W Africa in the 1600's including the extent of European interaction and the slave trade. This copy is in a fairly new full leather binding with raised bands and gilt titles to the spine. The binding is in near fine condition. New endpapers and initial and final blanks have been added. Contents: title page; author's preface 2pp; E Indies pp 1-187; Finis map of E Indies lacking; folding map of 'The Canarie or Fortunate Isles'; text pp 1-128 with 5 plates and sections on the rivers Zamenee St Domingo and Geva; Finis. Overall very clean with light toning to paper. There is a small ink mark to the side margin of the title page through to p4; a small repaired margin tear at p 37/8 of E Indies section; and a little light underling at the beginning of the Canary Islands section. This copy lacks several title pages both of the book as a whole and of individual treatises and also lacks 10 pages of text scattered across three locations. The front board and first page of epistle dedicatory are detached from the rest of the book; this board has a mended corner. The paper is in remarkably good condition throughout apart from a few tears especially considering that the book is over 400 years old - if only some of our modern books were printed on paper as durable as this! Joseph Hall Bishop of Norwich was a Calvinistic Anglican and an English representative at the Synod of Dordt. He held some evangelical and puritan principles but was not part of the Puritan movement. The one unnumbered leaf has two pages recto and verso of advertisements including one for Keimer's newspaper the London Post. Indexed in ESTC Defoe t070860 Moore 330 Furbank and Owens. A critical bibliography of Daniel Defoe no. 180 Smith Anti-Quakeriana p.35. A beautifully preserved copy in an attractive binding of Defoe's "pseudo-Quaker rebuke to the Earl of Mar the leader of the Jacobite rebels making much of his violation of the Oath of Abjuration pointing out the folly of his hopes of English support and prophesying his defeat" University of London Library-Senate House catalog note.Moore reports six copies of which I could confirm four still in the collections. World Cat lists four more for a total of eight library holdings of the first edition. Size: 8"-9" - Octavo 8vo. 32 pages. The high quality paper upon which the pamphlet was printed remains bright and in excellent condition. The pamphlet has been rebound in the late 19th century in three-quarter red leather and marbled paper over boards. Worn at the tips and head and foot of the spine. Additional pages of laid paper have been bound in to create a book thick enough for the title and date to be stamped in bright gilt on the spine. No foxing in this copy although the first and last page title page and verso of the catalog are a bit soiled and there is a spot in the margin of one page not affecting any text.
