1857List2968Henderson Minnesota Territory 1857. Single three-page letter measuring 8 x 10 inches. Fine. A letter written shortly before Minnesota’s statehood concerning territorial politics particularly African-American suffrage. The author C. Graham writes to N. E. Nelson:

“After you get to Red Wing you will be governed by your judgment & advice of the democrats at Red wing – Try & get the Lake City Tribune of 12 Sept. last No. 34. In an Editorial the Editor says that he goes for negro suffrage & that the Negro is as much entitled to vote as the ignorant & degraded foreigner &c.â€

The Minnesota Territory had a complicated relationship with race and rights. At the time its largely Yankee elite were ostensibly anti-slavery despite the fact that slaves could be kept there—the infamous Dred Scott case had been decided earlier that year. Earlier in the decade voting rights had been extended to certain Indigenous people; and Catholics particularly Irish Catholic immigrants were allowed to vote but barred from much of the region’s economic life.1 The latter in particular at least partly drove the surge in popularity of the Democratic party with working class whites in the territory. Unfortunately this edition of the Lake City Tribune newspaper has not been archived online at the time of writing.

1 William Davis Green A Peculiar Imbalance: The Fall and Rise of Racial Equality in Early Minnesota Minnesota Historical Society Press 2007. unknown

1860List3317Likely Plumas County California 1860. Single four-page letter measuring 7 ½ x 9 ½ inches. Folded with some small tears at folds; excellent. A letter from “Charly†to his wife or fiance written in January of 1860 from “Ganser possibly sic Valley†likely in Plumas County California. Located in the Sierra Nevada Plumas County contained a number of mining towns following the California gold rush; however Charly does not specify his line of work or discuss any particulars. Instead—besides inquiring after the health of family and friends and considering when he would return home—Charly discusses the other residents of the valley. He writes:

“I can tell you that I have not much news to write we are hemmed in here by the mountains and only see very few people except the inhabitants of the valley and their number is not very great we have lots of Digger company though there being lots of them in the valley and at this season of the year they are hard up for grub and they hang round most of the time sometimes we ask them to eat with us sometimes not You may be sure they are a hard nest of beings as you ever thought of them there are sorry Chinese and they are but little ahead of the Diggers though they will work which the Diggers will not if they can help it There is what might be called a mixed population here from all parts of the earth some work some do not and there are a great many of the last classâ€.

“Digger†is a derogatory term applied to several Indigenous peoples in the region referring to their diet of root vegetables. In this part of California they would likely have been Northern Paiute or Mono people. Following the US’s acquisition of California and especially after the discovery of gold these groups were decimated by murder enslavement and disease; an 1896 article notes that the Plumas area had proportionally more survivors of American depredations.1

Of interest to historians of the late gold rush especially relations between Anglo-Americans and other races.

1 Mabel L. Miller “The So-Called California ‘Diggers’†Popular Science Monthly 50 December 1896 201–214. unknown

1882Cat343New York City 1882. Five record books: May–Oct. 1874 46pp 8 x 12 ½ inches appx. 13000 words; Nov. 1874–Apr. 1875 48pp 7 ½ x 11 ¾ inches appx. 10000 words; Dec. 1875–Jun. 1876 24pp 7 ½ x 11 ¾ inches appx. 7000 words; Sept. 1880–Apr. 1881 55pp 8 x 9 ¾ inches appx. 13000 words; Oct. 1881–Aug. 1882 56pp 8 x 12 ½ inches appx. 22000 words. With fourteen small pieces of scrap paper mainly used for arithmetic. Overall very good. A set of record books belonging to Stephen F. Hill a real estate broker and property manager working in Brooklyn in the 1870s and 80s. His entries document improvements and their costs rents collected neighborhoods worked in and sometimes personal activities. For instance he writes on June 4 1874:

“Rainy morning & partly and sic cloudy balance of the day Paid for Drilling 24. Marietta went to Mrs Sands & Mrs Dunnalleys – Cars to N.Y. & 62/- Struck a writing from Brundage agreeing to let me have the loan upon my getting a perfect title of Gates ave lots. Paid for Column Brick for 449 N. Street – 1.30 .â€

One ongoing project in 1874 was building a house on Atlantic Avenue; the exact address is not given but the property is mentioned a number of times. On completion Hill apparently considers renting the property to an African American family writing on November 18th “I went up to see about the Negroe’s in Atlantic Ave†and on the 23rd “James & wife Colored called about Atlantic Ave house.†However it seems he does not rent the property to this family as on December 18th he mentions that he “went up to see Ayers about renting A.A. House at $8.00 per monthâ€.

Hill manages properties at a range of values; an entry from March 20 1875 describes renting a pricey house on Grand Ave.:

“Revd. W. M. Martin & Mr. H. E. Riggs called this evening They took the Grand ave House at $1.000 per month. Mr Martin takes the whole of the main House excepting the back Parlor and he also is to have the north upper extens. room adjoining Bath Room at $700.00 and Mr Riggs takes all of the two Extensions excepting the Bed room mentd. and the back Parlor for $300.00 both parties to have use of the sub cellar & Bath Room and the Laundry one day in the week for washing purposesâ€.

Again the exact address is not provided but this must have been quite a grand house for the price at which it rented. Occasionally addresses are mentioned including 439 Herkimer St. 38 and 108 Putnam Ave and several addresses on Fulton St. in Bed-Stuy.

Hill does not mention being a temperance man—at the time the movement was quickly gaining popularity with the general public—but has issues with several chronically intoxicated employees. One “came home intoxicated and kept us up all night†January 31 1875 and another spends nearly a week in jail and is re-arrested shortly after his release Feb.–April 1875.

Other entries mention seeing “Mr Beecher & others speak on Political topic†October 8 1880 sending coal to tenants paying mortgages and taxes and dealing with insurance companies. Overall the logbooks document the development of Brooklyn as it became one of the most populous cities in the US. unknown
