The image consist of 4 smaller group photos showing 35 subjects total including 5 female Graduates. Names of all the subjects listed at the bottom. The albumen is mounted to photographer's board. Although women did own and operate businesses during the 19th century many of them were apprenticed or self-taught as educational opportunities were limited. For a graduating class to include women at all much less 5 makes this group exceptionally scarce. Financial independence through business acumen provides a level of freedom women were not often allowed within a patriarchal society as rigid as 19th century America.
