190311772no place: no imprint 1903. First Edition. Staplebound. Very good . Octavo 39pp. A very good or better copy in the publisher's stapled wraps. Faint vertical crease throughout; long ago flattened. Mild corner wear; contents clean. Cannon the "Reunion Secretary" for the unit was in charge of publication and he has INSCRIBED the volume on the title page above his printed name: "To Comrade H. A. Smith with compliments." Company K of the 150th Ohio Volunteer Infantry was organized out of a group of volunteers almost entirely from Oberlin College who answered the Ohio Governor's call for 35000 troops to serve for 100 days during the summer of 1864 to defend existing Union railway lines and supply houses in the Mid-Atlantic including Washington. The regiment fought in a number of small skirmishes as well as the Battle of Fort Stevens where President Lincoln was quite nearly killed by Confederate sharpshooters. This regimental narrative if brief is detailed and difficult to find anywhere. Biographies of every soldier including details of their lives in the 49 years since their service are collected at the rear including most of their home addresses. OCLC records five physical holdings at the LOC Oberlin and three Cleveland institutions. Untraced at auction. Ryan 100; not in Broadfoot. [no imprint] unknown

12639Original Civil War half plate 4.5" x 7" tintype showing a Rodman naval and siege cannon with 6 unidentified individuals posing by the cannon. Rodmans were among the heaviest and most powerful guns of the Civil War. Due to their size and weight these cannons were used during the civil war in fixed positions in batteries and forts to protect the waterways. These weapons weighed 42500 pounds and could hurl a 450 pound shot over 4 miles. <br/>Rodman's process permitted larger guns to be manufactured guns that were previously impossible. The Union ordered 8 10 13 15 and 20 inch caliber Rodman Columbiads. The 15 inch Rodman was the largest actually used by the Union during the Civil War. In this tintype we see the backside of the bottle shaped cannon sitting on its metal mount that would hold the 20 ton cannon with 2 men sitting on the mount and 1 standing next to it. Rodmans such as the one pictured here were among the largest of the guns of the period and used in defenses and fortifications. They were capable of firing a large shell or ball up to several miles. Even today these remain some of the largest cannons ever made. A small white flaw underneath the cannon mount does not detract noticeably from the image. In very good condition. unknown books
