Envoyé extraordinaire (ambassadeur) du roi en Bavière dès 1714 et jusqu'en 1722. L.A.S., Munich, 10 juin 1718, 4p in-4. A un prince de la maison de Bavière, probablement Clément-Auguste de Bavière (1700-1761), à propos d'affaires d'argent et de sa probable place de coadjuteur de l'électeur de Cologne. Il ne semble pas que cette place fut donné ni à Clément-Auguste de Bavière ni à un autre prélat. Toutefois, il eut la place de prince-évêque de Münster peu après avant de devenir archevêque électeur de Cologne. Ecriture un peu éclaircie. [373]

Lorsque les circonstances m'ont permis d'assister à ses sans, elle m'a rendu justice en ce que j'ai toujours partagé. Ses principes et son opinion, je te prie de lui dire, qu'elle peut disposer de tout ce qui dépend de moi, sois mon interprète auprès d'elle et tâche d'obtenir pour moi la continuation de sa bienveillance, je la mériterai, tu peux en être caution. "Mon général, blessé, pillé, fait prisonnier au Fort l'Ecluse, dont je commandais l'artillerie, je regretterais de n'avoir pu vous adresser plutôt le journal de défense, s'il pouvait écrire quelqu'intérêt, si la résistance avait été plus opiniâtre et de quelque utilité. Le petit mémoire ci-joint a principalement pour but d'estimer la valeur des ouvrages qu'on a fait pour la défense du Fort l'Ecluse et de présenter les fautes dans lesquelles on est tombé...". Ce journal de défense a été publié en 1840 sous le titre "Observations sur la défense du fort l'Écluse en 1815" et fait l'objet d'un article dans la revue "Le spectateur militaire" d'août-septembre 1838. "A sergeant’s journal of captivity reworked by the editor; very bitter over deliberate cruelty to prisoners but also gives facts tending to show the opposite." -- Nevins Civil War Books page 195. The author a Sergeant-Major in the 16th Connecticut Volunteers recounts his experiences at Andersonville Georgia and Florence South Carolina. He describes brutal conditions frequent deaths challenges to daily survival escape attempts and moments of humanity. This colorful detailed account is one of the best first-person descriptions of captivity in a Confederate pow camp. Front cover has three small colored spots gilt flaked off the spine but readable small label removed from the front pastedown sheet light wear to the fore-edge of the title page else internally clean and tight.
