Before entering World War I the United States was poorly equipped with heavy artillery. To address this problem a number of foreign heavy artillery guns were adopted including the Canon de 155 mm GPF. After the end of the war the Westervelt Board was convened to assess the artillery experience of the combatant powers and map out future directions for the US Army artillery. The conclusion of the board vis-a-vis heavy field artillery was that the French 155mm GPF should be adopted as the standard heavy field piece but further development work should occur to achieve a heavy field gun with a max. range of 25000 yards a vertical arc of fire from 0° to 65° a projectile not exceeding 100 lbs and the capability to be mounted on a caterpillar mount or a rubber tired towed mounting. The Canon de 155 C modèle 1915 Saint-Chamond was a French howitzer used during World War I. It was based on a private prototype of a 150 millimetres 5.9 in howitzer presented to the Mexican government in 1911. The French government ordered 400 Saint-Chamond howitzers in 1915 these being delivered starting in late 1916. Small numbers of Saint-Chamond howitzers were given to the Serbian and Romanian armies towards the end of World War I. The Saint-Chamond howitzer served in the French Army after World War I and were mobilized at the outbreak of World War II. Finland bought 24 Saint-Chamond howitzers during the Winter War and these served until the 1960s. Although the Saint-Chamond howitzer was 400 kg lighter than the equivalent Schneider howitzer its maximum range was 2400 metres 2600 yd shorter. It was used in second line and training units until the end of World War 1. Army War College paperback

The following system of Drill Regulations for Infantry is approved and published for the information and government of the Regular Army and the Organized Militia of the United States. With a view to ensure uniformity throughout the Army all infantry drill formations not embraced in this system are prohibited. This represents the state of knowledge and the state of practice at the time the United States Army was engaged in overseas combat operations during the First World War. Success in battle is the ultimate object of all military training; success may be looked for only when the training is intelligent and thorough. Commanding officers are accountable for the proper training of their respective organizations within the limits prescribed by regulations and orders. The excellence of an organization is judged by its field efficiency. The field efficiency of an organization depends primarily upon its effectiveness as a whole. Thoroughness and uniformity in the training of the units of an organization are indispensable to the efficiency of the whole; it is by such means alone that the requisite teamwork may be developed. The Drill Regulations are furnished as a guide. They provide the principles for training and for increasing the probability of success in battle. The principles of combat are considered in Part II of these regulations. They are treated in the various schools included in Part I only to the extent necessary to indicate the functions of the various commanders and the division of responsibility between them. The amplification necessary to a proper understanding of their application is to be sought in Part II. Drill combat marches and camps ceremonies and inspections as well as manuals are all addressed. This represents the state of knowledge state of practice and standard of training during the final months of the Second World War. It incorporated lessons learned and new technical developments since the issuance of the previous edition in mid-1941. Military manuals are several series of official publications intended to be instructive and informative. They were produced by all the branches of service but are generally called Army manuals. Using a phrase which appeared in many they were "published for the information and guidance of all concerned." During the 1940s military manuals were approved by the Chief of Staff and authenticated by the Adjutant General. Field Manual FM 21-6 List and Index of War Department Publications is a detailed list of the manuals that were available. The War Department which became the Department of the Army in 1947 issued three major classes of publications -- administrative doctrinal training and organizational and technical and equipment publications. Administrative publications include publications such as Army Regulations Special Regulations Bulletins Circulars General and Special Orders and Pamphlets; doctrinal training and organizational publications contain Field Manuals Army Training and Evaluation Programs Training Circulars Tables of Organization and Equipment and Tables of Allowances; and technical and equipment publications include publications such as Technical Manuals Technical Bulletins Supply Manuals etc. The Library of Congress does not have a complete set of these publications but its holdings are extensive and significant. United States Army Field Manuals are published by the United States Army's Army Publishing Directorate. As of 27 July 2007 some 542 field manuals were in use. They contain detailed information and how-tos for procedures important to soldiers serving in the field. Starting in 2010 the US Army began review and revision of all of its doctrinal publications under the initiative "Doctrine 2015". Since then the most important doctrine have been published in Army Doctrine Publications ADP and Army Doctrine Reference Publications ADRP replacing the former key Field Manuals. Army Techniques Publications ATP Army Training Circulars TC and Army Technical Manuals TM round out the suite new of doctrinal publications. Not all FMs are being rescinded. Select Field Manuals will continue to be published periodically reviewed and revised. Army manuals include publications on historic U. S. military vehicles including military motorcycles jeeps military trucks scout cars tanks and amphibians; aircraft including fixed wing and rotary craft; radio equipment; cooking; and language dictionaries and phrase books.
