1739WRCAM47525London: T. Cooper 1739. 228pp. Lacks half title. Modern tan half morocco and cloth spine gilt. Minor soiling and wear. Very good plus. Letter concerning the secession on March 9 1739 of the "Patriots" from the House of Commons over the negotiations preceding the War of Jenkins' Ear. The Patriots were Tories and disaffected Whigs who opposed Sir Robert Walpole the first Prime Minister. Walpole argued for peace and moderation in dealing with Spain and he was supported by a scant majority. This letter presents the informed view of a member of Parliament displaying the furor in England for the protection of their American trade and decrying the factitious nature of English politics. The secession proved advantageous for Walpole because it allowed him to push through several bills relating to the free exportation of sugar and molasses from the West Indian Colonies. ESTC T138894. 194515609Glenview IL: Naval Air Training Command 1945. First Edition. Wraps. Good . 4to. Illustrated wraps. Contemporary post binding added at left margin. Most paper lost from spine. Wrapper edges worn chipped. Internally clean sound.

An original illustrated manual issued to WWII Naval flight cadets training at NAS Glenview dated July 1 1945 to the title page. Generously illustrated throughout with dozens of original drawings likely the work of a single unnamed illustrator and photograph reproductions executed and lettered in a decidedly Seuss-ian style heavily influenced by modern cartooning lending a simplistic treatment to gravely serious and technical material. A portion of the "Safety" chapter on p. 29 with the exaggerated likeness of a pilot resting upon a cloud holding a harp wearing angel wings and captioned: "Don't try to be the 'hottest' pilot but try to be the 'oldest.'" and "There are bold pilots and there are old piltos 'But!' - there are no old bold pilots." Six chapters are broken into dozens of sections with titles like: Your Parachute Safety Inherent Stability Turns Normal Spins Landings Steep Turns Precision Immelmans Progressive Spins etc. The impact of the allied air campaign and skill of American pilots during World War II is seldom mentioned in modesty. This is a rare flight training publication and exceptional example of illustrative instruction. OCLC notes only 2 institutional holdings one at The Smithsonian the other in the aviation archives at Wright State in Dayton OH. None in commerce June 2015. 243pp. Naval Air Training Command paperback books

A letter written by the renowned Russian ace and world record setting Sikorsky test pilot on behalf of Danish-born ballet and Broadway dancer Paul Haakon considered by many to be one of greatest ballet dancers of the 20th century.

Reading in part: "I have known Paul Haakon Longreen for over sixteen years. In the theatrical profession he is known under the name of Paul Haakon. It is very well known that he is one of the best dancers in the world. He gave up his dancing recently to become a flying instructor purely to serve his country. I sincerely believe that anything which could be done to facilitate his joining the United States Army Air Force reserve would benefit our war effort."

Despite Sergievsky's recommendation in our letter it seems Haakon never became a combat pilot during WWII and instead toured as an entertainer with the United Service Organizations. 16794Confederate States of America $ 1000 loan Bond with Coupons Richmond 1862. Original Loan with 23 coupons first 8/1865 With elaborate engraving and ornate boders Richmond October 1862. When the Civil War broke out the newly-formed Confederate States of America needed to create a monetary system to finance the government and the war effort. To raise money to finance its government the Confederate States of America issued bonds. This bond dates from late in the Civil War when printing too much paper money had created rampant inflation. The Confederacy began issuing bonds. After the Confederacy's defeat the U.S. government refused to cover Confederate debts making the bonds worthless as debt instruments or market securities. its bonds had no value and this bankrupted many confederate families. Over the following decades most of the worthless bonds were destroyed. Very good example complete with fully attached redemption coupons in very good condition. unknown books

1864WRCAM53699Richmond 1864. 2pp. Minor toning to edges very faint ink stamp of the Rebel Archives on first page. Very good. An interesting slip-bill seeking to authorize the Confederate treasurer to take account of Tennessee's military expenditures since their "early withdrawal from the United States." Apparently the state of Tennessee was seeking reimbursement for military expenses and also for the loss of disbursement vouchers that resulted from Tennessee "being overrun by the enemy and by the burning of the buildings occupied by the Quartermaster and Commissary and other unavoidable causes."

The bill was put forth by James McCallum who represented Tennessee in the Second Confederate Congress. Like many others around the end of 1864 McCallum must have seen the writing on the wall and tried to get back as much money for his state as possible as the war and thus the Confederacy ended just about four months later.
