In basso numero, "Israel ex." e "SDBella f." Incisi oltre l'immagine solo i numeri. Impressione eccellente. Slight stains on pages, a modern repair on a leaf with tape, otherwise a very good copy. Bound together with "Eski Sevda" which is a compilation of Turkish tales. First and only edition of this richly illustrated scarce and uncommon book was printed for the German Emperor Wilhelm II and his wife Augusta Victoria, the commemoration of the construction of Alman Çesmesi [i.e. German Fountain] in Constantinople, and the first anniversary of the Wilhelm II's travel to the Ottoman Empire in 1898. The fountain's design was drawn by the architect Spitta and constructed by the architect Schoele with the German architect Carlitzik and Italian architect Joseph Anthony, working on the project. The fountain was built in Germany and then transported piece by piece to Istanbul, reassembled in its current site, and officially opened on January 27, 1901, on the birthday of German Emperor Wilhelm II. Wilhelm II's voyage to the Levant in 1898 was a state visit that the German Emperor undertook in the Ottoman Empire between 25 October and 12 November 1898. The Kaiser started his journey to the Ottoman Eyalets with Istanbul on 16 October 1898; then he went by yacht to Haifa on 25 October. After visiting Jerusalem and Bethlehem, the Kaiser went back to Jaffa to embark on Beirut, where he took the train passing Aley and Zahlé to reach Damascus on 7 November. This book is richly illustrated including many views of the cities of this voyage's destinations like Jerusalem, Damascus, Beirut (Beirut), Jafa, Baalbek, etc. On 10 November, Wilhelm went to visit Baalbek before heading to Beirut to board his ship back home on 12 November. His visit spurred interest in the German Templer colonies in Palestine. One of the Kaiser's traveling companions, Colonel Joseph von Ellrichshausen, initiated the formation of a society for the advancement of the German settlements in Palestine, named the Gesellschaft Zur Förderung der Deutschen Ansiedlungen in Palästina, in Stuttgart. It enabled the settlers to acquire land for new settlements by offering them low-interest loans. A subsequent second wave of German settlers founded Wilhelma (named after the Kaiser, now called Bnei Atarot) in 1902 near Lod, Walhalla (1903) near the original Jaffa colony, followed by Bethlehem of Galilee (1906). The German Settlement Society successfully encouraged some of the Templars to return to the official, national Protestant Church. The non-Templar colony of Waldheim (now Alonei Abba) was subsequently founded next to Bethlehem of Galilee in 1907 by proselytized Templers now affiliated with the Old-Prussian State Church. The visit resulted in the highest-profile political event in the life of Theodor Herzl, considered the founder of Zionism. Through the efforts of William Hechler, via Frederick I, Grand Duke of Baden, Herzl publicly met Wilhelm II three times during the voyage, once in Istanbul (on 15 October 1898) and twice in Palestine (29 October and 2 November). The meetings significantly advanced Herzl's and Zionism's legitimacy in Jewish and world opinion. (Wikipedia). Only one copy in OCLC (Library of Congress. In-4°, (2cc), Clemens papae V. Monitorium, & declaratio excommunicationis, interdicti, & aliarum poenarum ecclesiasticarum contra Venetos ... 12cc; Sixti papae IV. Declaratio & promulgatio excommunicationis, interdicti, & aliarum censurarum contra Venetos ...(10cc); Iulii papae II. Monitorium, & declaratio excommunicationis, interdicti, & aliarum censurarum ecclesiasticarum contra Venetos ...(10cc) + Mandata Reipub. The recovery of the Venetian economy was accompanied, in the years between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, by the search for autonomy from Spain and the papacy. The search for autonomy - which led Venice to establish diplomatic agreements with the Protestant princes, with England and the France of Henry IV - led the Republic to growing tensions and then to the clash with the Roman church, led at the time by Pope Paul V. The most acute phase of the opposition occurred with the "interdetto" (1606-1607). On this occasion, Venice did not bow to the pope's requests to repeal some laws that regulated ecclesiastical property in the territory of the Republic, also refusing to hand over two Venetian priests, accused of common crimes, which the religious authority claimed to judge according to their own codes and thus remove from civil jurisdiction. Faced with the "interdict", that is the excommunication imposed by Rome, the Serenissima reacted vigorously: among other things, the Jesuits, the powerful religious order identified as an instrument of papal interference in the life of the Republic, were expelled from Venice. After a phase of growing tensions, in which Venice obtained the support of the Protestant states, the affair was drawn to its conclusion thanks to a compromise, favored by the King of France.

In-4 °, 48pp, title page with printers mark and motto In te Domino speravi non confundar in aeternum, wood engraved initial. Bernardo Giusti's writing is part of the controversy following the so-called 'guerra dell’interdetto', in which Venice did not bow to the pope's requests to repeal some laws that regulated ecclesiastical property in the territory of the Republic, also refusing to hand over two Venetian priests , accused of common crimes, which the religious authority claimed to judge according to their own codes and thus to remove from civil jurisdiction. Bernardo Giusti condemns the supporters of Venetian independence comparing them with Wycliff and Marsilio of Padua.

"Except for the last few chapters, this entire work was written from day to day during the three years of the author's internment in Santo Tomas and is therefore to be considered as a prison document. The writing of any such record as this was forbidden by the Japanese under strong menace. In the end they destroyed their own records and those of the successive internee executive committees, but the author's voluminous typescript, carefully hidden away, was never found by them. Every story is based on interviews with numerous persons who participated in the events they talked about." - Foreword. No dust jacket. Unmarked with somewhat above-average wear to grey boards. Includes illustrations in text (halftones) and a section of ads. The World Labor Athletic Carnival was organized to directly oppose U. S. Athletes' participation in the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, which were viewd as providing both legitimacy and a prime propaganda opportunity to Hitler's Nazi government. Put together in 1936 by a coalition of New York left-wing political organizations and labor unions including the heavily Jewish International Ladies' Garment Workers Union (ILGWU) , the Socialist and Communist Parties, the Jewish Labor Committee, and others, the Carnival took place over two days, coinciding with the two final days of the Berlin Games, and involved an array of high-profile American, Canadian, and a few international competitors including high-jumper Walter Marty, sprinters Eulace Peacock and Perrin Walker, and pole vaulter George Varoff. In the end, the Carnival proved something of a disappointment from both an attendance and an athletic perspective. Aside from Varoff's world-record setting performance in the pole vault, "... The New York Herald Tribune described the athletic performances as 'mediocre' and noted that the spectators were unenthusiastic'" (for a detailed account of the event, see Edward S. Shapiro, "The World Labor Athletic Carnival of 1936: an American Anti-Nazi Protest, " in American Jewish History v.74, no.3 (Mar 1985) , pp.255-273) . No copies anywhere in OCLC.
