A very rare copy of this, the first appearance of The War on the Rebate, Chapter 1 of Part 2 of Ida Tarbell's ground-breaking History of the Standard Oil Company. This 14-page chapter includes a one-page illustration of J.D. Rockefeller by George Varian, plus photos of William C. Scofield, Daniel Shurmer, John Teagle, George Rice, and Benjamin Butler. This chapter deals with organized espionage, the Scofield-Shurmer-Teagle Case, and related matters. With this work, Tarbell invented what we know today as investigative journalism. She was motivated to expose the methods of J.D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil as she felt he had unfairly damaged her father's oil business. The New York University Department of Journalism ranked this study as the fifth best work of 20th-century American journalism. Also contained in this issue is an intersting article entitled The Lone Fighter, by Ray Stannard Baker, which argues the U.S. is not a free country and Americans are not free, due to labor bosses, and government by and for 'The Bosses". A very rare copy of this, the first appearance of A Modern War For Independence, Chapter 6 of Part 2 of Ida Tarbell's ground-breaking History of the Standard Oil Company. This 18-page chapter deals with the united opposition of producers which developed against J.D. Rockefeller's heavy-handed dominance of their industry. Illustrated with photos of A.D. Wood, Lewis Emery Jr., Thomas W. Phillips, Peter Theobald, E.H. Jennings, David Kirk, Michael Murphy, James W. Lee, Hugh King, and Clarence Walker. With this work, Tarbell invented what is known today as investigative journalism. She was motivated to expose the methods of J.D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil as she felt he had unfairly damaged her father's oil business. Les tomes 1 à 24 retracent l'histoire des différents faits militaires français ; les tomes 25 & 26 contiennent une table d'errata et une biographie militaire française dites "Tables du temple de la Gloire"l. L'ouvrage "Couronne Poétique" contient les chants & poésies consacrés à la Patrie & au courage, Enfin, le dernier ouvrage est une une galerie de portraits des maréchaux et généraux. The National Jewish Welfare Board (JWB) was formed on April 9, 1917, three days after the United States declared war on Germany, in order to support Jewish soldiers in the U.S. military during World War I .In 1921, several organizations merged with the JWB to become a national association of Jewish community centers around the country in order to integrate social activities, education, and active recreation. These merged organizations included the YWHA, YMHA, and the National Council of Young Men's Hebrew and Kindred Association (Wikipedia). These quarterly journals report on those efforts and make suggestions for how to improve outreach, activities, and leadership; they also make other proposals and raise questions for the Jewish Community Center movement to grapple with. Edited by the great 'Republican' Thomas Hollis, with additions and corrections by Joseph Robertson, this edition includes: Memoirs of the Life of Algernon Sydney; Discourses Concerning Government; Letters of Algernon Sydney, taken from Thurloe's State Papers; The Protector's Advice to Algernon Sydney; Letters of Algernon Sydney, taken from the Sydney papers; Letters of A. Sydney to Henry Savile, Ambassador in France; The Trial of A. Sydney; The Apology of A. Sydney in the Day of his Death; and A General view of Government in Europe. This is an important book in the history of the ideas that founded the American republic, but what is perhaps most interesting about this copy are the manuscript notes and annotations written, in a careful small hand, in America, during the Civil War (1863). A few of these struck our eye, and we're glad to reproduce a few selections here: "I have lately undertaking to read Algernon Sydney on government. There is great difference in reading a book at four and twenty and at eighty eight. As often as I have read it and fumbled it over, it now excites fresh admiration that this work has excited so little interest in the literary world. As splendid an edition of it as the art of printing can produce, as well as for the intrinsic merits of the work, as for the proof it brings of the bitter sufferings of the advocates of liberty from that time to this, and to show the slow progress of moral, philosophical, political illumination in the world, ought to now be published in America" - John Adams to Thomas Jefferson 17 September, 1823. ".the danger in America. arises from (1) the indifference of the people to the character of their deputies; (2) the disinclination of good men to go as deputies; (3) and the inclination of bad men to go as such. The conduct of government is the work of statesmen - of unselfish, honest, high-hearted, great-minded men = that class has disappeared and has given way to small country lawyers whose minds exercise only upon petty squabbles of the neighborhood, incapable of grasping the vast concerns of a nation. Bad as this is, there is something worse. and that is that the profession of the law is every year sinking lower in ignorance and in contempt, while at the same time it is rising in power." - 1863. A SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY TO DAVID LOW, WITH THE AUTHOR'S HOLOGRAPH INSCRIPTION DATED 1947 ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. This scarce collection (the author's first book and sole collection of verse) contains the structured poem 'Lessons of War', Part I of which, 'Naming of Parts', is arguably the most famous poem to emerge from WWII. It also contains the famous T S Eliot parody 'Chard Whitlow'. PRESENTATION COPIES ARE EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE. THIS ONE IS TO DAVID LOW, LEADING BRITISH POLITICAL CARTOONIST AND CREATOR OF 'COLONEL BLIMP'. A New Zealander by birth, Sir David Low (1919-1963) arrived in Britain in 1919 to progress his fledgling career as a political illustrator. In his early years in Britain he worked with a variety of publications including the 'Star', 'New Statesmen', 'Punch' and 'The Graphic'. In 1927 he was invited by Lord Beaverbrook to join London's 'Evening Standard' and the rest is history. A staunch anti-fascist, Low used the scaithing and incisive poweer of his cartoons to attack the complacency of the British establishment in the 30s; in 1934 he created in Colonel Blimp' one of the most famous figures in newspaper cartoon history. His work was swiftly banned in both Germany and Italy and after the outbreak of war several of his cartoons were used to inspire the British people during the darker days at the beginning of the conlfict. Low was appointed an official War Artist and as such attended the Nuremberg War Trials. He was knighted in 1962. Many of Low's cartoons were published in book form, the most famous collections being 'Low's Political Parade with Colonel Blimp (1936) and 'Europe at War' (1941). His most famous character was the basis of 'The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp' (Powell & Pressburger, 1936), one of the most important feature films in the history of British cinema. Major-General Frederick Edward Sotheby (1837-1909), born in Sewardstone, Essex and only son of Rear Admiral Charles Sotheby, led a distinguished military career. Commissioned in the Rifle Brigade in 1855, he served in the Crimea at the siege and fall of Sebastopol and the storming of the Redan. HE WENT ON TO SERVE THROUGHOUT THE INDIAN MUTINY AND WAS WITH HIS REGIMENT DURING THE CAPTURE OF LUCKNOW AND THE OUDE CAMPAIGN. Later service included the Chinese War (1860) where he was present at the surrender of Pekin, and the Ashanti War (1874) where he fought at Amoaful and Coomassie. Sotheby retirned in 1888 with the rank of Major-General. His family seat at Ecton Hall, Northamptonshire, was renowned for its library, of which the present set doubtless formed a part. 'Malleson's history begins at the close of the second volume of Sir John Kay's history. Malleson defends this action in his preface. Here he states that the third volume of Kaye did not do justice to the actors in the drama of the Mutiny' (Sorsky). Chuadhuri calls Malleson's work 'the most exciting in Mutiny literature'. EDITION LIMITED TO 520 COPIES. Bright, crisp copy of Frederic Manning's masterpiece, published anonymously (as was the expurgated version 'Her Privates We' a year later). The frankness and detail of the story was praised by many of those who shared Manning's front line experiences (including Lawrence and Sassoon) and the work as a whole found favour with men of letters, among them Hemingway and Bennett. Today the work is recognised as the finest novel to emerge from the Great War, and one of the very finest in the literature of warfare. 'No praise could be too sheer for this book' (T.E. Lawrence).

Levovitz was the Mashgiach Ruchani of the Mirrer Yeshiva in Poland. One of the great exponents of Mussar. He was a talmid or Rav Simcha Zissel Broida one of the foremost disciples of Rabbi Yisroel Salanter. Below are eight fascicles printed in Shanghai. The first three fascicles were first published before the Holocaust in Baranovitch, the fourth was published in Kaiden due to the war. For a period during 1940, the town served as home to about 300 students and teachers from the Mir Yeshiva. After WWII, much of orthodox Jewry in Europe was wiped out, along with their many yeshivas (Jewish schools of higher learning) . One of the only yeshivas to survive as a whole body was the Mir Yeshiva, which managed to escape miraculously to Shanghai, China, and then on to America. Many of the new leaders of the American and Israeli yeshivas in the post-war period were students of the Mir, and thus followers of Rabbi Leibovitz. SUBJECTS: Litvak Holocaust Displaced Persons. This book is told in the first person, in a succession of scenes, impressions, portraits, thoughts, reflections and emotions that, in chapters very brief and titled, make up a devastating panorama about Elinas experience in Auschwitz. I recorded it in notes and drawings. This constituted Without flowers nor Crowns. I do not regret having written these notes as soon as I returned from camp because, over time, memories become distorted, they become watered down or dramatized, but always move away from the truth. (...)" Odette Elina (1910-1991) was a painter, was deported by the Gestapo to Auschwitz-Birkenau in April 1944 as a communist, but above all and above all because she was Jewish. In 1940, she entered the French Resistance network, she had had an initial function to establish the liaison between the writers residing in the South zone (notably Mauriac, Aragon and Julien Benda) before entering the Secret Army in 1942. 1st Edition: Original Boards with Original Dust Jacket. 8vo. 437 pages ; 21 cm. In the original Czech, later issued in English as A Box of Lives. This is a beautiful copy of the scarce first edition with the original illustrated dust jacket. Norbert Frýd (born Norbert Fried) (1913 1976) was a Czech writer, journalist and diplomat. He is known mainly for his autobiographical novel Krabice ivých (A Box of Lives, 1956) , in which he describes his experiences in Nazi concentration camps. During World War II, he was imprisoned in the Theresienstadt, Auschwitz and Dachau-Kaufering concentration camps The plot is set in the last months of 1944, in the fictional concentration camp of Gigling. The main character, the young intellectual Zdenek Roubík, is an assistant in the camp office. One of his jobs is to maintain the card index of the inmates, hence the title of the novel, A Box of Lives. In the camp, Roubík gradually manages to overcome the apathy and depression caused by the death of his brother and he becomes more actively involved in camp life. The author attempts to depict everyday life, social interactions and relationships in the camp, and the work and hardships of the inmates. The description of the SS guards in the camp is a focus of particular attention The novel was acclaimed by contemporary critics, and republished in numerous editions and translations. (Wikipedia, 2017) Frýds successful novel was published twice in Czech in 1956, with this 1st edition being much rarer than the stated 2nd edition. OCLC lists just 4 copies worldwide (Emory, Wisconsin, Johannes-Gutenberg-Universitat Mainz, Univ Of Basel) , and none in New York City or in the North East United States. Slight toning. And minor edgewear to dust jacket but overall both book and jacket are in very good condition. Attractive, rare, and important. (holo2-135-48)
