Presumably a Republican attack on the then-gubernatorial candidate a Pennsylvania Supreme Court justice. ".the creed which Judge Woodward's party has adopted is servile unpatriotic and disorganizing. the Judge's position in regard to the great issues now before the country is faithless inconsistent and wholly delusive." The writer then critiques Woodward's famed 1860 speech criticizing "The Falseness of its Statements in regard to the Abolition of Slavery by the North" "Judge Woodward's Bible Views of Slavery" and "The Right of Secession as Claimed by Judge Woodward." Woodward critic of course does not let him forget his infamous statement that "We must reassert the rights of the slave-holder." Not in Sabin. Interesting and unusual. N.p. paperback

2773Without date or place. 3 pages 8vo. On three leaves of paper all creased discoloured and worn some fading with a few tears and pin holes. Lively humorous and well-written account of the army career of a skiver. 'Behold me then the next time in the trenches a Lewis Gunner <in going> my-self to be about to kill Bosches in neat little trenches of 47. As a matter of fact I did not kill one as I never fired the gun but we had one or two thrilling times. . January 1st. 1917 I became a member of the now famous Tank Corps. I said 'Goodbye' to Pack & rifle and received instead a kit bag & revolver it was one of my ambitions to possess a revolver But I was not happy for it was cold very very cold & I hate the cold. I was very thankful though to be out of the trenches where men were being frozen to death.' He then becomes a draughtsman for the Reconnaisance Office 'having an uncle and sic architect' before taking up 'yet another role for my Company R.O. had left his servant behind & so I stepped into his shoes & thus fulfilled the double duties of draughtsman and batman. This went on until just recently when my officer was wounded & went home to Blighty. I have now helped in a minor capacity the preparation for several big 'do's' & travelled hundreds of miles upon the trusty Triumph including one never to be forgotten joy ride to our Rest Camp by the sea where I spent eight days upon which was undoubtedly the best stunt of all viz. doing just what I liked.' On the verso he pens bold and large: "Monument of / 21st Wis. Infantry. / Chickamauga. / paraph / Taken on the battle / field by A.R. Tillinghast / July 15 1900." Just the faintest hint of shelf wear one color plate with minor tear but still a fine and handsome copy--clean and fresh internally in a lustrous decorative binding.<br/> <br/> This sumptuously illustrated publication celebrating Belgium and its King Albert I is offered here in a lovely contemporary binding. Assembled in the early days of the First World War this publication aimed to raise broader awareness and support for the plight of the Belgians at the hands of the Kaiser's armies as well as honoring the nation's bravery. Novelist Hall Cain 1853-1931 who edited the anthology wrote in the introduction that "Belgium has fought not only her own battle but also the battle of France the battle of Great Britain and the battle of Freedom. By her brave stand against incalculable odds she has added a new and inspiring chapter to the heroic annals of humanity and perhaps lifted to a higher level the future destinies of man." Following the 1914 British edition by only a few months our American printing includes a note that the publisher's proceeds are to be donated to the Belgian Fund. "King Albert's Book" includes text music and illustrations by nearly 240 contributors including religious leaders Aga Khan the Archbishop of Canterbury politicians William Howard Taft Winston Churchill authors Rudyard Kipling Baroness Orczy scientists Guglielmo Marconi Flinders Petrie composers Claude Debussy Camille Saint-Saëns and of course artists: the plates include works by Arthur Rackham Charles Dana Gibson Kay Nielsen Maxfield Parrish Edmund Dulac and others. Two of these plates by Rackham and Sir Ernest Albert Waterlow have been mounted as doublures in the present copy. The luxury binding though unsigned was evidently the work of a very skilled artisan. The quality of the finishing is excellent and the design is harmonious though sufficiently restrained to be respectful of the subject matter. Hearst's International Library Co unknown

1901303348VP including Ladysmith Geluk Farm Vluchfontein et al. 1901. Nine ALS three TLS eight carbons. 64 pp in total. Folio & 4to. Very good some tiny chips to carbons and one two spots of minor dampstaining not affecting legibility. In manilla folder. Nine ALS three TLS eight carbons. 64 pp in total. Folio & 4to. A fine group of letters by an English intelligence officer steadily rising through the ranks. In 1899 he is "sleeping in the open air only one blanket & one waterproof sheet." Within a year he was Lord Roberts' private clerk and in December 1900 he is stationed at the Commander-in-Chief's Office Kitchener's doing "confidential military work for the Military Secretary to Lord Kitchener." <br /> <br /> Although part of the intelligence service Carter saw more than his share of fighting. He describes the march to Ladysmith and the action at Elands Laagte Station noting "a bullet going through the top of my helmet and cutting off some of my hair but without even scratching the skin."<br /> <br /> The next four letters were written from Ladysmith and provide a full account of the siege. "The Boers had big siege guns mounted on the hills around Ladysmith which quite outclassed our light field guns . They'd completely invested Ladysmith & cut the telegraph lines & pulled up the Railway . Then began the long dreary siege." Carter reports using "a lot of pigeons" and the cost of Kaffir and Zulu runners to get letters out of Ladysmith and at least one of his letters not here was published in the Hamilton Spectator.<br /> <br /> The siege is depicted much like a holiday camp citing football matches swimming races water polo cricket. "We got so indifferent to the Boer 'snipers' that you would see most of our chaps having an afternoon siesta behind their trenches while bullets would be chipping the stones around them. We also used to organise pools when we could see some of the Boers and have a long range shooting match the man who bowled the first Boer over taking the pool." Yet there is also much on troops movements information on the Boers the conditions of Ladysmith accounts of engaging the enemy and reflections on the experience of combat: "the actual fighting is all right as the excitement deadens your faculties but after a battle when . you see your poor companions who a few hours before were joking with you lying dead or else writhing in the agonies of pain caused by frightful wounds then you feel your courage leaving you and your nerves getting like wax." <br /> <br /> The remaining correspondence includes three letters as Carter's regiment treks across the Transvaal through August and September 1900. These too are full of detail of life in the field bivouacking scouting enemy positions and action: "There was a grand opportunity for our Field Artillery. They simply pumped shrapnel into them the Artillery Officers going mad at the sight and shrieking to the gunners 'fire! fire! hurry up you b----- fools you never had such a chance fire!' . You could see at every discharge of the guns the Boers falling and at the same time our splendid Infantry running for all they were worth trying to get at them with the bayonet . It is very seldom the Boers leave any wounded or dead behind them and it proves how hard we pressed them . It was like a shambles . one two or more bodies horribly mutilated by the effects of the Lyddite."<br /> <br /> The final group commences with Carter being stationed at the Commander-in-Chief's office and he wastes no opportunity to use the special mail service for his own correspondence. He describes Kitchener at work and provides insight to life in the office. Yet beneath this is a yearning for the war to end and a frustration that it can't be done in one swift battle: "We cannot get a good fight out of the beggars they simply have a few shots at us and as soon as we get near enough to do some damage off they go helter-skelter." <br /> <br /> This group were all addressed to Carter's long time friend we know only by the name of Jose. Given the warmth and detail included here it's possible that he was using these letters as a substitute for a diary. Carter served with some distinction in 1st Manchester Regiment and was mentioned in the despatches. unknown

32958Hardcover. On September 26 1814 the American privateer "General Armstrong" named after Continental Congressman John Armstrong Jr. a U.S. Army general under the command of Captain Samuel C. Reid was docked at the Portuguese port of Fayal in the Azores when three British warships on their way to the Caribbean to join a flotilla for the Battle of New Orleans decided to violate international laws of neutrality and instead attack. Under the command of Robert Lloyd the British ships finally succeeded in scuttling the American brig though they suffered 65 killed and 117 wounded in the process while the Americans lost only two; the American crew escaped to land. The incident was an enormous tactical error that swung the War of 1812 in the direction of the Americans for it gave General Andrew Jackson time to reach New Orleans and prepare for the battle. It was also a public relations disaster for the British becoming a sensation in popular songs poems books and colorful prints. Collection of six pamphlets bound chronologically. Small 4to. Hand-lettered vellum spine and green paper over boards. 3pp; 24pp; 150pp; 28pp; 5pp; 25pp. Very good. Mild age toning and faint soiling to binding; first couple pamphlets rather age toned with bit of dampstaining but remainder clean handsome and tight. Pamphlets in order consist of: 1 Frederick Jenkins and Rensselaer Havens "In Senate of the United States. January 23 1817." N.p.: N.p. 1817. 2 "Memorial of Sam. C. Reid Jr. In behalf of the claimants of the brig General Armstrong praying indemnity." Washington DC: Government Printing Office 1854. 33d Congress 1st Session Mis. Doc. No. 14. 3 "In the Senate of the United States. The Court of Claims submitted the following Report. Claimants Brig General Armstrong vs. The United States." Washington DC: Government Printing Office 1858. 35th Congress 1st Session Mis. Doc. No. 142. 4 "Owners of Brig General Armstrong. Memorial of Sam. C. Reid in Behalf of the captains owners officers and crew of the late United States private armed brig General Armstrong their heirs executors administrators or assigns." Washington DC: Government Printing Office 1879. 46th Congress 1st Session Mis. Doc. No. 16. 5 "Brig General Armstrong. Report. for the relief of the captain owners officers and crew of the United States private-armed brig General Armstrong." Washington DC: Government Printing Office 1880. 46th Congress 2d Session Report No. 1014. 6 "In the Senate of the United States. Report. for the relief of the captain owners officers and crew of the late United States private-armed brig General Armstrong their heirs executors administrators agents or assigns report the said bill with an amendment and recommend its passage." Washington DC: Government Printing Office 1881. 47th Congress 1st Session Report No. 270. An interesting and unusual assemblage spanning 65 years obviously gathered by someone intensely interested in the outcome of the financial claims made afterward -- makes you wonder if it belonged to one of the "heirs executors administrators or assigns" often referred to! hardcover
40506New York: H. De Marsan n.y. Broadside. 6¼" X 10". Very good. Numerous edge chips along right side and bit on lower edge only slightly encroaching on decorative border. This crudely printed broadside ballad undated but circa 1861 includes a thick decorative patriotic border featuring red and blue stars and stripes olive-branch clutching American Eagle etc. with publisher's data "H. De Marsan Publisher / 54 Chatham St. / N.Y." at bottom center of border. Sung to the tune of "Marshal Ney" a popular tune celebrating the Napoleonic figure this Civil War tune celebrates the 69th New York Infantry Regiment the "Fighting Irish" or "Fighting Sixty-Ninth." Two stanzas and one chorus are featured the chorus reading: "Right and left -- left and right: / We fought the Rebels with all our might; / Brave CORCORAN did wounded fall / And HAGGERTY died by a Traitor's ball." Irish-born Michael Corcoran 1827-63 led the 69th at the First Battle of Bull Run in July 1861 in which he was taken prisoner and Irish-born Captain James Haggerty the first member of the 69th to die was reportedly killed by a Louisiana Zouave which also included many Irishmen. These "penny ballads" were all the rage during much of the 19th century and were invariably printed on thin delicate stock and sold by street vendors. A quite attractive example of this rare survivor. Inkstamped on verso is "Geo. F. Hambrecht" -- a well-known Civil War collector and noted Lincoln scholar 1871-1943 who founded the Lincoln Fellowship of Wisconsin and served as director of the Wisconsin State Board of Vocational Education.
