Boards soiled and rubbed minor scuffing to edges. Light occasional foxing. A rare yearbook memorializing the first year of training for the 54th Coast Artillery during the early stages of World War II at Camp Davis North Carolina. The 54th Coast Artillery was an important African-American support unit during the war which according to the opening letter here from Major General F.H. Smith was designed "to build up antiaircraft antitank antinaval and balloon barrage units prepared to assist effectively in the defense of our Country its cities airports naval bases and foreign possessions." The majority of the personnel of the 54th Coast Artillery was comprised of enlisted men from Texas Kansas and Missouri. The present yearbook includes photographic portraits of the staff officers and other personnel at Camp Davis scenes around the base action shots of the soldiers in various aspects of training scenes of the soldiers during recreational sports and more.

Most notably the book includes photographic portraits of hundreds of African American enlisted men who served in the 54th including Private Leo Beasley who is pictured on page 68. The album was given to Beasley in early December 1941 by his commanding officer and then presented by Beasley to his mother. By the time he received the yearbook Beasley had attained the rank of corporal. Interestingly in 2023 the mayor of Pacific Grove California issued a special proclamation recognizing the service of the 54th Coast Artillery in World War II noting that "Despite that these troops were armed and clothed with used weapons and secondhand uniforms dating to World War I they did not complain and served with pride and distinction."

OCLC records just four copies of this yearbook from the 54th's first year of service at the Pentago Library East Carolina University UNC-Chapel Hill and NYPL listed by either the cover title or the first sectional title page which gives the title as Historical and Pictorial Review Antiaircraft Training Center Camp Davis North Carolina 1941. 1868255England London or Liverpool: John Fraser & Co 1868. First Edition. Parchment paper. Fine. Description: 1 January 1868 6 % Bond for US-$ 40.27 Series 4 #B1460 35.2 x 21.2 cm black white browned signed by Theodore D. Wagner and William Trenholm; signed on back by William Trenholm & Jos. Wileman. Issued by John Fraser & Co. the overseas and mainly English banking branch of George Trenholm's financial empire. Scarce signature and bond. George Trenholm was a prominent Confederate States of America financier with major interests in blockade-running. As the Confederacy collapsed he was called upon to become Treasurer in the government of Jefferson Davis between 18 July 1864 and 27 April 1865. His son William was one of his most important surrogates and signed for his extremely busy and often ill father. Most blockade runners of the American Civil War were seagoing steam ships that were used to make their way through the Union blockade that extended some 3500 miles along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coastlines and the lower Mississippi River. By 1860 the company Fraser Trenholm & Company had five seagoing vessels making shipping runs from Liverpool to New York and Charleston and back again. It has been argued that wealthy blockade-runner George Trenholm provided a good deal of the blockade-running background for Margaret Mitchell's famous novel Gone With the Wind. See the episode in which Rhett Butler is kept prisoner in the stable of a Fire Engine House when his Union captors--and soon Scarlett O'Hara--hope to win some of Captain Butler's wealth which he has secreted in Liverpool. In EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION--unfolded--with minimal age-toning and very clear signatures! John Fraser & Co unknown

187133942Northumberland August 5 1871. 1871. Good. - Octavo 7-1/8 inches high by 4-3/8 inches wide. Over 300 words penned on all four sides of a folded sheet of creamy white paper with the address embossed in blind at the top of the cover sheet. Replying to a request for his assistance in working out a solution to the strike by engineers in Newcastle seeking that limits be placed on the hours they are required to work each day: "I also yesterday received a letter on the same subject from Mr Lowthian Bell - In answer to his letter I told Mr. Bell that I would be very glad to do anything in my power to assist in bringing the unfortunate strike at Newcastle to a close but that I fear that nothing that I would do would be likely to promote that object & might even tend rather to increase than to diminish the existing irritation between the employers & the employed." Earl Grey asks if the recipient might have some "arrangement to propose for the settlement." which might help him decide if he should get involved in the negotiations. He mentions in closing that he will be traveling over the next several days culminating with his being "compelled to go to London to vote against the ballot bill". Signed "Grey". Folded twice horizontally the letter was once mounted or tipped-in to a book with remnants of paper adhering to the top edge of the last page not affecting the text. There is also a tiny piece of dark paper near the lower center of the last page which does not touch on the text.
The "Nine Hours Strike" began in August of 1871 when engineers in Newcastle upon Tyne and adjoining areas requested that working hours be limited to nine hours a day. The bitter strike was prolonged when employers refused to talk and brought in foreign workers in an attempt to break the strike. Though there were a few incidents of violence many of the foreign workers soon realized that they were being used to support a system of industrial slavery and would lose their jobs anyway once the strike was resolved. The strike went on for 14 weeks before employers finally compromised and granted the strikers' request.
The Ballot Bill to which Earl Grey refers proposed that parliamentary and local elections in the UK take place by secret ballot. The Bill was passed in 1872.
Also known as Viscount Howick the English statesman Henry George Grey 3rd Earl Grey 1802-1894 entered parliament in 1826. His father became Prime Minister when the Whigs came to power in 1830 and Earl Grey then Viscount Howick was made Under-Secretary of State for War and the Colonies. Aligned with colonial reformers he resigned in 1834 when the emancipation of slaves was made to take place gradually instead of immediately. He became Secretary of War when he entered Lord Melbourne's cabinet in 1835 and made significant administrative reforms. He again resigned in dissatisfaction in 1839 and gained a reputation for crotchetiness. He supported free trade and as colonial secretary a post to which he was appointed in 1846 was the first minister to proclaim that the colonies should be governed for their own benefit and not for that of Great Britain & Ireland. As much as possible he accorded them self-governance. He was however soon embroiled in the turmoil and discontent brewing in Ceylon the West Indies and New Zealand. He authored several works on political subjects and policy including an 1888 work on the state of Ireland and one on the United States tariff. Northumberland, August 5, 1871. unknown

"Virginia Clay-Clopton 1825–1915 was a political hostess and activist in Alabama and Washington D. C. She was also known as Virginia Tunstall Virginia Clay and Mrs. Clement Claiborne Clay. She took on different responsibilities after the Civil War. As the wife of US Senator Clement Claiborne Clay from Alabama she was part of a group of young southerners who boarded together in the capital in particular hotels. In the immediate postwar period she worked to gain her husband's freedom from imprisonment at Fort Monroe where Jefferson Davis former president of the Confederacy was also held. In the late 19th century Clay-Copton who remarried after her first husband died became an activist in the United Daughters of the Confederacy a group established after the Civil War that was instrumental in shaping public discussions about the war and role of the South. She worked to raise funds for Confederate cemeteries and memorials. She also worked for women's suffrage. Clay-Copton was one of a number of Southern women to publish her memoir at the turn of the 20th century; these women's accounts became part of the public discourse about the war.
