Gen. James B. Ricketts. Although the VI Corps faced heavy fighting throughout the Civil War 1864 was particularly violent - this field hospital was undoubtedly packed throughout the year. In the wake of the Battles of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania during the Overland Campaign to the close fighting near Mule Shoe also known as the "Bloody Angle" the assault at Cold Harbor and the Shenandoah Valley campaigns the VI Corps saw nearly two-thirds of its 24000 soldiers killed or wounded. In December 1864 the VI Corps returned to the Army of the Potomac and in April 1865 played an important role in the final assault on the fortifications of Petersburg. unknown books
