"A rather important print published by subscription probably his only one" Peters. <br /> Here is the Library of Congress description: "This print depicts the Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon located at the southwest corner of Swanson and Washington Avenues in Philadelphia during the American Civil War. The saloon was a volunteer relief agency supported by the citizens of Philadelphia which provided meals hospital care and washing sleeping and writing facilities to military personnel refugees and freedmen throughout the war. The print shows soldiers cheered by civilian onlookers marching out from the main building to embark on cars of the Philadelphia Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad for transport to the battlefields to the south. The flag in the upper left-hand corner proclaims "Union For Ever" indicating the main initial war aim of the North and of President Abraham Lincoln: to preserve the Union by forcibly preventing the secession of the Southern states. Below the main illustration are views of the soldiers eating in the enormous dining hall and of meals being prepared. The illustration is by lithographer William Boell also seen as William Buell. Born in France around 1832 Boell worked in New York from 1854 until about 1859. He then moved to Philadelphia where he established his own firm and was active until the 1880s. Het Nederlandse grondgebied had een belangrijke strategische ligging voor de strijdende partijen in de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Dit boek is de eerste integrale studie over Nederlandse oorlogsvliegvelden en de rol die zij in de luchtoorlog hebben gespeeld. Vanaf het begin van de Duitse bezetting richtte de Luftwaffe hier vele vliegvelden in om haar offensieve en defensieve taken te kunnen uitvoeren. In het laatste oorlogsjaar waren het juist de geallieerde luchtstrijdkrachten die deze nieuwe op de Duitsers veroverde vliegvelden gebruikten om nazi-Duitsland te verslaan. Meer dan veertig vliegvelden worden in dit boek behandeld. Wat betekende het voor de burgerbevolking om in de nabijheid van die vliegbases te wonen die vaak het doelwit waren van luchtaanvallen Vliegvelden in oorlogstijd gaat op zulke vragen uitvoerig in. Vele foto's documenten en schetsjes. De grootste vliegbasis van de Duitse Luftwaffe lag in de Tweede Wereldoorlog op Limburgs grondgebied. Het was Fliegerhorst Venlo-Herongen die tussen november 1940 en maart 1941 op last van Hermann Göring werd aangelegd door meer dan 60 Nederlandse en Duitse bedrijven en 15.000 arbeiders uit heel Nederland. Bouw en inrichting van het complex dat een oppervlakte van 2500 hectaren besloeg kostten meer dan 10 miljoen gulden. Dat geld kwam uit de Nederlandse schatkist. In 2 delen vertelt dit boek de geschiedenis van dit inmiddels verdwenen vliegveld dat nog steeds tot de verbeelding van hele generaties spreekt. Het speelde als militair oefenterrein reeds een rol in de pioniertijd van de Nederlandse en de Europese vliegerij maar het kreeg een roemruchte reputatie in de jaren 1941-1944 toen hier het elite Luftwaffe-escadrille I.NJGI gelegerd was. Deze eenheid nachtjagers streeds boven heel Zuid_Nederland een bloedige luchtoorlog tegen de geallieerde bommenwerperconvooien die het oorlogspotentieel van Hitler-Duitsland moesten verpletteren. Indringend wordt deze krachtmeting beschreven inclusief haar gevolgen voor de burgerbevolking in het operatiegebied.
