Querformat. 1911001126Edinburgh and London 1911. Fothergill George. TWENTY SPORTING DESIGNS with Selections From The Poets One of Ten Special "PRESS" Copies. Edinburgh: Printed by Neill & Company for the Author 1911. Private Subscription Edition de Luxe limited to 300 copies plus twenty for presentation and a further ten "press" copies. A GOOD to VERY GOOD copy in the original grey decorated boards with green cloth spine gilt. in very acceptable condition given the large size of the book and the fragile illustrated boards general wear-and-tear especially to the fore-edges some scrapes to the boards corners bumped tiny stain to lower cover but the all important contents are fine. Previous owner's docket number in ink on front pastedown. Fothergill was quite the accomplished artist and here he provides five magnificent mounted plates one in color based on his paintings and more than two dozen brilliantly accomplished pen-and-ink drawings also based on his originals. Nicely decorated borders and headpieces throughout. Engravings and woodcuts including those in tricolor accomplished by Hislop and Day as well as David Robinson & Company both Edinburgh firms. TWENTY SPORTING DESIGNS was intended by the author to compare to the timeless style of William Morris' Kelmscott Press. The poetic excerpts which accompany the illustrations are by Shakespeare and nineteen other great poets and are "sporting" in theme. Fothergill was a fox-hunting enthusiast who lived in Midlothian and who spent years of his life on this labor of love which was entirely sold out to subscribers many to various masters-of-hounds around the British Isles as can be seen on the subscribers list at the back of the book . Fothergill has made a holograph addition/ inscription to the colophon which solves the mystery of the limitation. Three hundred copies plus ten extra hors de commerce plus a further ten "press" copies of which this is #5. . Signed by Author. Edition De Luxe. Good to Very Good. Illus. by George Fothergill. Privately Printed. hardcover books
