The title page is inscribed and signed by the publisher "To Irving Thalberg with kindest regards and best wishes Morris Gest". Original half vellum over paper-covered boards the upper side illustrated and titled in gilt spine lettered in gilt. With minor soiling and handling to cover light toning on backing paper pages else fine condition. From the estate of Norma Shearer whom Thalberg married in 1927. 100 pp. 11 x 14 .5 in. <br><br><br />A remarkable association copy inscribed to the legendary Hollywood production executive Irving Thalberg who took hold of Universal City at age 20 and supervised such films as Ben Hur and Mutiny on the Bounty among many others. He died of pneumonia at age 37.<br><br><br />Morris Gest born 1881 in Vilna Lithuania as Moses Gershonovitch died May 16 1942 at the age of 61. He produced "The Miracle" in 1924 and "Lady Precious Stream" in 1936 introduced an original Russian ballet to America Baliev's 'Chauve-Souris' and brought Stanislavski's Moscow Art Theatre in repertory to America in 1923. n.p. hardcover books

In German with translation.<br/><br/>Salten writes to fellow children's book author Hermine Lorch after reading one of her manuscripts:<br/><br/>"The fairy tales are very pretty very sentimental and also of the type that I like. I truly believe that they will find readers."<br/><br/>From the collection of the distinguished American mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne b. 1934. <br/><br/>Uniformly browned; light scattered foxing. Austrian author Felix Salten is best known for his novel Bambi: A Life in the Woods 1923 which was the basis for the Disney film. His stories also inspired the Disney films Perri 1957 and The Shaggy Dog 1959. Apart from this legacy Salten was a prominent art and theater critic in Vienna. As a Jew living in Vienna Salten's books were banned in 1936 and he fled to Switzerland following the German annexation.<br/><br/>Hermine Lorch was also a children's author in Austria but there is little record of her work. It is possible that she was a victim of the Holocaust as there is someone of that name listed in the database of the Holocaust Museum. <br/><br/>"Horne had a voice of extraordinary range rich and tangy in timbre with a stentorian chest register and an exciting top. In concert she once achieved the feat of singing in a single programme Rossini arias and Brünnhilde's Immolation Scene proof of her exceptional versatility. Notated in treble clef on one staff. In 3/4 time with a key signature of four sharps. With autograph titling "Ov. Tannhäuser Wagner."<br/><br/>Slightly soiled; trimmed; verso with minor annotations in pencil and remnants of former mount to upper edge. ". In 1893 Godfrey undertook to organize a band for the Winter Gardens Bournemouth. This was later augmented to become the Bournemouth Municipal Orchestra of which Godfrey remained conductor until he retired in 1934. Despite heavy administrative commitments and conducting engagements elsewhere he maintained a high standard of performance not only of works from the conventional repertory as well as neglected symphonies by composers such as Bruch Raff Svendsen and Saint-Saëns but also of important works by British composers. Parry Stanford Elgar Ethel Smyth and Mackenzie were all invited to conduct at Bournemouth and after the formation of a municipal choir with 250 members in 1911 the Winter Gardens festivals became famous. Godfrey was knighted in 1922 and elected FRAM in 1923. His Memories and Music London 1924 is informative on several aspects of the 'English musical renaissance'." E.D. Mascagni has written a two-measure extract from the baritone-soprano duet in his opera Amica in bass clef with the text "Più presso al sol!" Addressed on the verso to the collector Ramona Imaz Otaño. 14186Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Neatly penned autograph letter one page 5 x 6.5 no date but postmarked April 6 1922. Addressed on the reverse in Dukas's own hand to Henri Prunières and signed "Paul Dukas." The letter apologizes for missing a visit from the addressee and from "Monsieur Béla Bartok whose acquaintance I would have been delighted to make. All the more so since I must respond to your kind invitation for Saturday. I have to be in Valenciennes on Sunday to help with the concert of the Societé du Conservatoire there. And if I don't take the train at 5:10 in the evening on Saturday I will have to get up at 6:30 to leave on Sunday morning! So in this case despite all my regrets I must excuse myself." A scarce and rather charming letter from the French composer critic scholar and teacher best known for his "L'apprenti sorcier "The Sorcerer's Apprentice and his opera "Ariane et Barbe-bleue."<br style="">Bartok's 1922 visit to Paris was part of a larger concert tour of Britain France and Germany ending with the premieres of Bluebeard's Castle and The Wooden Prince on 13 May in Frankfurt. In Paris he met important French composers including Francis Poulenc and Erik Satie. The Saturday soirée to which Dukas refers would have taken place just after an occasion recalled by Poulenc: "I remember a strange lunch on Saturday 8 April 1922 where Bartok and Satie met at my house for the first and last time. Like two birds who do not sing the same tune Bartok and Satie observed each other with suspicion and maintained an overwhelming silence that Auric and I tried in vain to break. For me it is an extraordinary and symbolic memory." Quoted in Entrancing Muse: A Documented Biography of Francis Poulenc p. 113.<br style="">Henri Prunières 1861-1942 was a French musicologist and international propagandist of contemporary art in various forms: music dance painting etc. He occupies especially in music an important place in the art world between the wars.
