Compiled by Count Alfred Hessenstein a German émigré from the former Grand Duchy of Hesse this volume represents one of the earliest English-language attempts to document resistance humour emerging from within the expanding Nazi concentration camp system. Illustrated throughout with sharp expressive cartoons by the elusive artist "Spitz" whose identity remains uncertain. Condition: Original pictorial wrappers Slight scuffing to Front-Cover. Title page shows scattered foxing/spotting typical of wartime paper. Light age toning to margins. Binding sound and contents generally clean. A well-preserved example of a fragile and seldom-seen publication. Notes: Published in 1939 before the outbreak of full-scale war in Western Europe this work predates the later more widely known documentation of Nazi atrocities.
