1st edition, original cloth, 8vo. 806 pages, illustrations throughout. In Yiddish with a Spanish title page. German soldiers first passed through Ratne at the end of June 1941, but Nazi rule was established in the town only in July. Between the retreat of the Soviets and the arrival of German security forces and administrators, locals plundered Jewish homes and businesses. Shortly after the Germans arrived, they shot 27 Jews and 30 Soviet prisoners of war. Acting through the Ukrainian police, they also introduced an array of anti-Jewish measures: Jews had to wear identifying armbands (later yellow patches) , comply with a curfew, hand in valuables, including ritual objects, and provide forced labor. It was forbidden for Jews to speak to Ukrainians. As early as July 1941, Jews from the countryside were already being relocated to Ratne. In the spring of 1942, a ghetto was set up there. After a partisan raid on Ratne in June 1942, the Germans shot more than 110 Jews, along with a few Ukrainians. The Destruction of the Jewish Community. In August, the Germans recruited Ukrainian peasants from Prokhid to dig pits at a nearby sand lot. On August 26, the ghetto was liquidated by a unit from the Gestapo outpost in Brest supported by the local German Gendarmerie post and Ukrainian auxiliary police force. Although several hundred Jews fled before they could be taken to Prokhid. Many others hid in the ghetto. Most were eventually caught and murdered as well. Between 1, 300 and 1, 500 Jewish men, women, and children were killed during this operation. A few dozen skilled laborers were left alive and employed in a workshop. They were shot in February 1943. 420 pages. Index. "As Douglas Reed, living in the Vienna he loved, was writing this book in 1937 and the early part of 1938, history seemed to be marching at its normal pace... the destruction of Austria was only a fear in the hearts of a few informed men. No sooner was the manuscript dispatched to the publisher, however, than the storm broke and the map of Europe began to change... The first forty-four chapters have been allowed to stand as they were written before Hitler's march into Austria... Fortunately, it has been possible to conclude the story of Austria in the last four chapters, which were written just after Hitler's arrival in Vienna on March 15th, when the author was forced to flee for his life to Zurich." - from Publisher's Note. Above-average external wear and soiling. Unmarked. Some yellowing to contents. Binding intact. A sound working copy. [Singerman 450] Book
1941141
1941 hardcover as pictured. This is Adolf Hitler's follow up to Mein Kampf. Published prior to the entry of the United States into World War II My New Order is a 1941 compilation of Hitler's speeches edited by Count Raoul de Roussy de Sales and introduced by Raymond Gram Swing. It is organized into sections covering Hitler's political rise the arming of Germany and later speeches from 1938 onward. The work is part of a broader Nazi ideological project known as the New Order which outlined the Nazi vision for a racially pure pan-German state and the reorganization of Europe and the World. It is thought to be the book that Ivana Trump said Donald Trump kept in a cabinet by his bed. Binding is firm. Black cloth boards with gold stamping on spine show edge wear with small tears at head and tail of spine and bumped corners. Previous owners' names on FFEP. Endpapers and text lightly age tanned. 19382310100094La defense francaise" Librairie critique Paris 1938. Paperback. Acceptable. Early French Edition of Mein Kampf banned during the German occupation In publisher's wraps. Cover worn with numerous tears. 13-635 pages 1 page 1 leaf ; 22 cm. This copy of Mein Kampf was the first to be translated into French but was not authorized by Hitler or his German publisher Franz Eher and was forced to be withdrawn. The French populace was obviously interested in Hitler's writings especially in regard to his intentions towards France. An authorized edition was translated into French in 1938 entitled Ma Doctrine published by a leading French publishing house Librairie Arthème Fayard. During the German occupation this edition "was placed on the list of "books withdrawn from sale by the publishers or forbidden by the Germans" often referred to as "Otto’s List" after Otto Abetz the German ambassador to France during the war." - See the New Republic "The Curious History of Mein Kampf in France" Manu Braganca July 5 2016.
