8vo., First Edition, with a frontispiece, 12 plates and 5 maps in the text; handsomely bound in burgundy full morocco, back gilt with five raised bands, second and fourth compartments lettered and ruled in gilt, all other compartments tooled and ruled in gilt, uncut, a most attractive copy ideal as a gift or for presentation. Classic study of the notorious gulf between High Command and the Front Line on the Western Front in 1915, particularly the disastrous generalship of Second Ypres, Neuve Chapelle and Loos. Compiled with free access to the private files of Liddell Hart, it takes its title from the well-known quotation: Ludendorff: 'The English fight like lions.' Hoffman: 'But don't we know that they are lions led by donkeys'. A LOVELY CPY OF A VERY SCARCE WORK. Enser, p.23.

Oblong roy. 4to., First Edition, with title in red and black, text and captions in red, blue and black, 34 splendid large plates in photo-collotype and full-page musical score in blue; original red cloth, upper board ruled and blocked with regimental badge in gilt, expertly recased, BUT WITH SOME AGE- OR DAMP-DAMAGE TO 22 OF THE LATER PLATES (mercifully restricted mainly to upper blank margins and only materially affecting around ten plates); nevertheless a valuable record and a very scarce work. An unusually lavish production for a single battalion, this work is distinguished by the quality of the plates, which (damage apart) varies from very good to magnificent. The photographs are superbly executed by F. Bremner, photographer, variously of Lahore, Simla & Quetta, and their rendering as collotypes preserves the quite extraordinary detail of faces, uniforms and equipment. The plates include fine portraits of Major-General Frederick Walter Kitchener (Commanding 3rd (Lahore) Division) and Colonel J.C. Yale (commanding 1st Battalion), together with close-ups of the Colours and mess plate. The main body of plates is devoted, of course, to group studies. These include the officers (individually captioned), the battalion on parade, the Colour and colour sergeants (individually captioned), the NCOs (individually captioned), corporals, companies A-H (each company photographed separately), and a fine series of the battalion's various support units, trades and sports teams. An unusual composition is the plate 'Regimental Types' and depicting eight members of the battalion in a variety of uniforms including officer's full dress and OR's marching order. In addition to the plates, there is a detailed account of the battalion's service from Tournay (1794) to its arrival at Lahore Cantonment in 1906, together with pages devoted to regimental marchess. Not the least importance of this work must be as a superbly detailed record of the appearance of a regular battalion of line infantry of the period - crucially, the last phase of Edwardian opulence and before the irreversible changes brought about by the Great War. EXTREMELY SCARCE. IT IS UNCLEAR HOW MANY OF THESE REMARKABLE PORTFOLIOS WERE PRODUCED; CERTAINLY NOT MANY, AND EVEN FEWER CAN HAVE SURVIVED. Sutcliife p.103; not recorded by White (1965).
8vo., First English Edition, on laid paper, with frontispiece, title in red and black, 118 plates and 4 maps (2 folding; 2 full-page), title lightly browned; elegantly bound in dark green full crushed morocco, sides with gilt frame border, back with raised bands, second and fourth compartments ruled and lettered in gilt, all other compartments tooled in gilt, gilt top, hand-made endpapers, uncut, original backstrip gilt mounted on new leaf at front, a most attractive copy ideal as gift or for presentation. With 16pp publisher's catalogue bound in at end. The author, better known as the Swedish explorer of Central Asia, spent two months with the German forces in France and Belgium early in WWI. His account, although criticised strongly for its apparent partiality, is nontheless valuable for its first-hand observations of the German Army at war, from command structures through to weapons and equipment. Many of the photographs are not easily available elsewhere. Enser, p.155.

A rare and early photographic illustrated book not listed in Gernsheim; Copac records just two copies (British Library & Glasgow University).
2 vols., 8vo., First Edition, with portrait frontispieces, 9 maps in the text, and front and rear endpaper maps in the second volume; cloth (black/red respectively), gilt backs, a very good, bright, clean set in unclipped dustwrapper, the wrappers lightly chafed and soiled at backstrips. A PRESENTATION SET SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR ON TITLE OF FIRST VOLUME. Comprises: The Turn of the Tide 1939-1943. A Study based on the Diaries and Autobiographical Notes of Field Marshal The Viscount Alanbrooke. (1957); Triumph in the West 1943-1946. Based on the Diaries and Autobiographical Notes of Field Marshal The Viscount Alanbrooke. (1959). By common consent the greatest CIGS in the history of the British Army, Alanbrooke occupied a unique position at the heart of Britain's efforts in WWII. Scarcely a man to pull punches, he provides a blow-by-blow account of how the war was waged and won, sparing no-one from politicians to generals of virtually every Allied nation. SIGNED COPIES ARE VERY SCARCE. Enser, pp.199, 474 respectively.
Single sheet, a near fine copy. Signed simply 'Wavell' in the writer's usual manner, the letter is written to Geoffrey Moore, founder of the Buccaneers Cricket Club, and demonstrates the soldier's keen and continuing interest in the sport. It is noteworthy that Wavell was particularly proud of his membership of the MCC at Lords. The letter declines Moore's invitation to attend the annual dinner, but carries Wavell's best wishes for the Club for the coming year during which he hopes to see tham in action. Field-Marshal Earl Wavell (1883-1950) was one of the twentieth century's most distinguished soldiers. Following considerable success against the Italians in North Africa, his career reached its peak with his appointment as Supreme Allied Commander, South West Pacific, ABDA (American, British, Dutch and Australian) Command in 1942 and subsequently as an outstanding Viceroy and Governor General of India from 1943-1947. He was recognised also as a scholar, compiling the well-known anthology of poetry 'Other Mens's Flowers' (1944). The bulk of Wavell's papers are now housed in the Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives at King's College, London. Founded in 1930, The Buccaneers is one of the oldest and most famous 'wandering' clubs in English cricket (a 'wandering' club has no fixed home ground but plays consistently as an 'away' team relying on the hospitality of the 'home' clubs against which it competes). The Club's history has been written twice, by Clifford Bax in 1956 and more recently by Howard Spencer. ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS SIGNED BY WAVELL ARE EXTREMELY SCARCE.
