Beginning with the battle of Kadesh (1285 BC) , where Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses II outmaneuvered the Hittites' massed chariot formations, and finishing with the battle of Catalaunian Field (AD 451) , where a combined force of Romans and Visigoths defeated Atilla's Hunnic army in a very bloody battle, the book features examples of every type of Ancient warfare. Battles of the Ancient World includes the devastatingly-effective use of the Greek-style phalanx at Marathon (490 BC) , Gaugamela (331 BC) , and Hydaspes (326 BC) ; great cavalry battles, such as Hannibal's destruction of the Romans at Cannae (216 BC) and the Parthian victory at Carrhae (53 BC) ; and the decisive sea battles of Salamis (480 BC) and Actium (31 BC). Lively accounts of other famous battles, such as Alesia (52 BC) , where Julius Caesar destroyed the Gaulish Army and subjugated Gaul, and Teutoberger Wald (AD 9) , where Germanic tribes slaughtered three powerful Roman legions almost to the last man, are described in vivid detail. Each battle includes an introduction to place it in context, a concise account of the action, and an analysis of the aftermath. A specially-commissioned color map illustrating the disposition and movement of forces brings the subject to life and helps the reader to grasp-at a glance-the development of the battle. With more that 200 color and black-and-white maps, artworks, and photographs illustrating the battles, leading figures, and tactics of the period, Battles of the Ancient World provides a useful and accessible introduction to some key battles of the Ancient era. Designed for both the general reader and enthusiast, the book is an essential companion for anyone interested in the history of Ancient warfare. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 224 pages; Oversized. Dr. Norman Bethune [1890-1939] is revered to this day in China for his front-line medical service to the Communist Army in the late 1930s. "But from the moment he joined the Communist Party of Canada, the RCMP secret intelligence division kept extensive and detailed files on his every move. Only recently declassified, and fully reproduced for the first time in this volume, are the actual secret police files on Bethune. Minor edgewear. Scholar's name to titlepage (Robert Brown). ; This comprehensive reader utilizes a step-by-step approach to help students of Latin read and understand the longest and most dramatic book of Caesar's Gallic War. Book 7 is the culmination of the conflict between Gaul, led by the young Arvernian Vercingetorix and fighting for its freedom and political survival, and the Romans, led by Julius Caesar and fighting for hegemony and political mastery. The final battle at Alesia, pitting the united might of Gaul at 339,000 men against a Roman army of 40,000, changed the course of Western history. This reader is ideal for Latin students of all levels who have a basic knowledge of grammar and morphology. The Latin text of all 90 chapters of Book 7 is broken down into manageable segments, normally about a sentence in length. Immediately following, all vocabulary is provided with several meanings of each word selected for that particular context. This is especially helpful for beginning students who are sometimes unsure which definition of a given word to select for translation. Following the vocabulary, there are notes on the passage. A unique feature of this reader is that the notes are complete and cover the syntax of every construction and every word in turn. The thoroughness of this reader facilitates speed in reading, increases comprehension, and promotes satisfaction in reading a difficult language. The benefits of this approach will be shared by teachers and students alike. ; 396 pages
