Boards show moderate fraying and rubbing to corners with some discoloration along extremities and modest cracking to spine. Plates lightly age-toned. An Extensive visual record of U.S Army uniforms as of October 11908 produce for official reference within the Department of War. A handsome first edition of this Civil War fiction sometimes attributed to John McElroy simply because it was first serialized between October-July 1885 in the newspaper he edited the "National Tribune" of Washington DC. Intriguing evidence that supports but doesn't prove this comes with this copy in the form of a laid-in heavy stock light red 5½" X 3¼" printed card. Recto titled "For $50 a Month" and consists of a "Personal to My Comrades" plea urging that Congress pass a "$50 a month pension for all honorably discharged veterans of the Union Army who served 90 days or more. the merest justice and recognition from the Government to the aged and deserving men who in their youth saved its existence at the greatest sacrifice to themselves." Signed in type "John McElroy." Verso contains another printed statement signed in type "The National Tribune" requesting "your $5 NOW" because "War work has taken many National Tribune employees. We cannot compete with the Government in wages and maintain the old subscription price. We must install new machinery. Help us by sending your subscription for a five-year period." 196470441Washington DC: Army Map Service 1964. Second edition first printing color broadside maps 28¾" x 22"; 1:1000000 scale; displaying boundaries roadways settlements and elevations; fine. Ulan-Ude is a Russian city close to the Mongolian border near Lake Baikal. This map was produced as part of the International Map of the World project. The project was the cartographical brain child of Albrecht Penck who in the late 19th century conceived of a series of maps uniformly produced that would cover the whole of the Earth's land mass. To accomplish this the planet was divided into 2500 segments and each segment was to be produced independently by various governments and NGOs. The project was envisioned to be strictly apolitical but this meant that buy-in was slow for governmental bodies and the lack of thematic information frustrated potential contributors in industry and led to University of Wisconsin cartographer Arthur Robinson declaring the resulting maps "cartographic wallpaper." When government agencies did contribute they did so as here in service to a bald political interest in a given region. Army Map Service unknown
