Half of the spine is missing another quarter is detaching. Front and back joints starting but covers are holding strong. Foxing within. According to Grasso's "A Speaking Aristocracy: Transforming Public Discourse in Eighteenth-Century" Solomon Williams argued that "Christ's kingdom was spiritual not worldly. A person can become one of Christ's subjects only by free choice and can so choose only if regenerated." The book has been signed on the front blank by owner Stephen White of Wilton CT 1760 and by his sons James and Jonas. Evans 5521. No ships here but a nice example of an early New England imprint. Early gift inscription across top margin of preliminary blank else a crisp attractive copy. An uncommon Amsterdam printing of the anonymous translation into French published by the Brothers Jacquemart in Selan the same year. The collations of the two printings differ so they are distinct editions. A printed Dedication to Gessner signed by the Jacquemarts precedes a 4pp. Note by them.
