An ihre Freundin Else Schubert- Christaller schrieben sie regelmäßig. Sie wurde ihr wichtigster nicht jüdischer Gesprächspartner in den Jahren zunehmender Verfolgung, Isolierung und, nach dem Weggang von Freunden, Bekannten und nächsten Angehörigen, unendlicher Vereinsamung. Diese Auswahl aus einem in sich geschlossenen Bestand von 500 Briefen eines der liberal-jüdischen Bewegung angehörenden Rabbiners und seiner Frau gibt auf erschütternde Weise den Blick frei auf das »innere Geschehen«, die Verarbeitung nationalsozialistischer Judenpolitik durch zwei Betroffene. Beide sind stark geprägt von bürgerlicher Bildung des 19. Jahrhunderts, Freunde und Verwandte gehören zur geistigen und religiösen Elite des deutschen Judentums, z. B. Anna Samuels Bruder Salomo Friedlaender, d. i. Mynona: Als Friedlaender Philosoph in der Nachfolge Kants, als Mynona Schriftsteller frecher und skurriler Satiren; oder Salomon Samuels Bruder Ernst, als Anselm Ruest im literarischen Berlin seit Anfang des Jahrhunderts bis zur Emigration nach Paris 1933 wohlbekannt. Die Briefe sind ein ungewöhnliches Zeugnis einer geistigen und persönlichen Freundschaft zwischen Juden und Nichtjuden, in einer Zeit sich festigend, in der jegliche Beziehung dieser Art unterbunden werden sollte. Während die Zurückbleibenden ins Ausland sehr verschlüsselt zu schreiben pflegten, einmal der Zensur wegen, die sie wegen »Greuelpropaganda« belangen konnte, zum anderen aber auch, um die Angehörigen - oft waren es die Kinder - nicht zu belasten, werden hier die Dinge in einer Weise geschildert und betrachtet, die zeigt, daß sich weder der Rabbiner noch seine Frau irgendwelchen Illusionen über den Charakter des faschistischen Systems hingaben. Zwei Monate nach ihrer Deportation nach Theresienstadt sind beide Briefschreiber tot. Aus dem Gesamt der Briefe wurden etwas mehr als die Hälfte für die Edition ausgewählt, z. T. gekürzt, in der Schreibung modernisiert, mit Anmerkungen, einem Namensverzeichnis, einem Glossar und, zum besseren Verständnis, mit einer Einleitung versehen. Salomon Samuel (1867-1942) studierte in Breslau und Berlin Philosophie, arabische Sprachen und Geschichte und promovierte in Halle zum Dr. phil. In Berlin absolvierte er die Ausbildung zum Rabbiner. Anna Samuel (1874-1942), aus einer bedeutenden jüdischen Familie Posens stammend, hat Malerei studiert. Salomon Samuel war von 1894 an Erster Rabbiner der Stadt Essen, 1932 siedelte er mit seiner Frau nach Berlin über, 1942 wurden beide nach Theresienstadt deportiert. Sie überlebten den Transport nur um wenige Wochen. Am 10. Oktober 1942 starb Anna, am 14. Oktober Salomon Samuel. ISBN 9783491722033
