Three volumes bound in one. Finely bound by Bradstreet's in half morocco over marbled boards with gilt to spine. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Armorial bookplate of Samuel F. Barger to front pastedown. Measuring 225 x 135mm and collating complete including titles: 295 1 blank; 124 2 errata; 2 44. A just about Fine copy with some inoffensive pencil annotations and corrections to volume I and occasional faint foxing; overall a pleasing copy of three scarce legal works related to women's custody rights according to international and interstate law. Three scarce tracts documenting the international custody battle that became highly publicized and debated in its time. In 1837 American citizen Ellen Sears married Daniel Gonsalve d'Hauteville a member of the Swiss nobility. During their brief union Ellen survived emotional neglect and mental cruelty from her husband whose "self-image as paterfamilias conflicted with Ellen's growing sense of herself as a mother tormented by an unfeeling spouse" DiFonzo. Pregnant and unhappy she left her husband for the U.S. giving birth to her son after her arrival. Under Common law doctrine d'Hauteville demanded that his wife and child return to his household in Switzerland. "But Sears and her Philadelphia lawyers devised a strategy that would challenge the accepted legal formulation along its emerging cultural fault line.leveraging mental cruelty into an accusation that d'Hauteville had violated the standards of the changing American family" DiFonzo. This strategy combined with gains that the women's movement had made in the U.S. and Europe marital property laws within the century helped bolster her position and win her custodial rights. "The d'Hauteville case was not a single event in a courtroom but a set of multiple legal experiences that exposed timebound and timeless realities of American legal culture. The case began in an insular way as a domestic drama must with the rapid rise and equally rapid fall of the d'Hauteville marriage. But as the fight for the son Frederick displaced their marriage as the central focus of Ellen and Gonsalve's relationship the law assumed a greater and greater presence in their lives. The pair not only confronted contradictions between their own ideas about justice and the legal rules they had to learn they also experienced the transformation of their domestic tragedy into a legal event with innumberable participants from lawyers judges and legislators to courtroom spectators newspaper reporters and diarists" Grossberg. The present tracts trace d'Hauteville's initial petition for Habeas Corpus followed by his petition to be exempted from a Rhode Island law protecting the rights of mothers. Full sheep scuffed with small pull top of spine joints good old paper library label. Oblong 13 cm 5 1/4 x 8 3/4 inches library name & withdrawn stamps on front paste-down library stamp on title page bookplate & withdrawn stamp of Young Folks' Library of La Junta Colorado on rear paste-down. 1806 ownership inscription in brown ink on ffep. Printed copyright statement tipped in behind title page not included in pagination. 1-24 31-160 1-96 last few leaves bound out of order.Defective: lacking three leaves of the Musical Primer pp. 25-30 leaf 59-60 chipped with corner loss. There is a stub between p. 6 & 7 the same width as the tipped-in copyright slip; we are unsure if it is waste or if something was cut out. Nothing of the sort is mentioned in the precise collation described in Crawford. This tunebook has three parts. The title page for the book as a whole has the imprint Cambridge: W. Hilliard 1803.The title page for the Second Part has the imprint Windsor Vermont: Naham Mower 1805.The third part has Boston: Printed for the Author by E. Lincoln 1805.The first two parts of the volume have continuous pagination; the third part begins with new page numbers. The three imprints and the pagination scheme match what Crawford calls the third edition - in other words this is how this volume is expected to be found.Crawford identifies this as the true third edition see bottom of p. 278 in his Andrew Law American Psalmodist. The three missing leaves are the "Scale of Rules" and Lessons I-IV. He does not mention the copyright as tipped in but as the verso of the tp. This may be a print run performed before the copyright was secured and then tipped in afterwards. The other item indicating a very early run or possibly first is the mistake in the title page "Christian" is misspelled as "Chistian". It is corrected on the title page for Part SEcond. The book is printed with the long and sort "s".Stanislaw 128. "The rudiments were widely copied by later compilers. 4th ed. was first to use four-shape system. Reverse faw and law shapes from Little and Smith's more popular system; no staff note-locations approximate.""Andrew Law's largest and most important work the Art of Singing is a collection of tunebooks composed of three different parts issued in four editions over a period of sixteen years and with inconsistent regard by the compiler for providing accurate bibliographical information on the title page of each item." Contemporary polished calf boards with foliate gilt borders with 20th century rebacked spines ruled in gilt blind tooling and handsome red and green leather title labels. xiv; 485pp.; vii; 519pp.; xix appendix; vii; 455pp.; xxxiv appendix; vii; 443pp.; vii appendix; 68 Index; 1 Directions to Binder. All volumes bumped to corners with some light rubbing of extremities some cosmetic scuffing and skinning of the calf boards in places some more recent scratching to the front board of vol. II handsome solid and tight; internally clean with minimal spotting where there is any it is mostly confined to the prelims some offsetting to the text in places annotated throughout in ink and pencil by a single neat 19th century hand clearly informed upon legal matters with some corrections to various statutes etc. also present are three laid in sheets of manuscript notes in the same hand discussing niceties of the text small closed tear to p.179 vol III not interfering with text p.369 vol III with partially clipped margin just shaving the edge of the text closed tear to p261 vol IV not interfering with the text and a corner missing to a leaf of the "Index to The Author's Notes" at the rear of vol IV; all plates and charts present as called for although the engraving of William Earl of Mansfield has been furnished with a somewhat comical moustache and goatee in a moment of tedium. A very good strong handsome set of the preferred edition of Blackstone the last edition to contain his authorial corrections and additions; with a little cosmetic wear and considerable character. Blackstone's Commentaries first published in 1765 ranks indisputably as one of the key legal texts of the 18th century in Great Britain separating as it does Crown Law into four distinct sections with clarifications; Rights of Persons Rights of Things Private Wrongs and Public Wrongs. It is also a work of considerable import to the American legal system having a strong influence on the formation of the US Constitution and The Bill of Rights. A. Strahan, for T. Cadell and W. 1860Cat354South Carolina and others 1860. Approximately 125pp with each item usually about 1 page. Some with slight water damage though legible; generally very good to excellent. A collection of mainly letters with some documents sent to the law firm Spain & Richardson of South Carolinaâ€”Albertus Chambers Spain 1821â€“1881 who in 1860 would sign the stateâ€™s Ordinance of Secession and James Sanders Guignard Richardson 1815â€“1879. Most of the documents concern estate administration and debt collection: a letter from Charleston presses the firm to â€œforce the debtor to payâ€ August 20 1855; one from New York complains of â€œa rascal . trying to swindle meâ€; and a different Charleston writer complains that a boarder and his father had stiffed him on multiple bills: â€œI have not seen or heard from old McLeod since although I have written over one doz letters to him he has acted in a villanous manner to me a common hod carrier would not act in the manner he has Done although claiming to be a Class Leader in the Methodist Church . â€˜Excuseâ€™ his mother was sick &c&c which I have since learned was all a fabrication . I did not think there was any such tricky folks in Sumter or Clarendon &c . You will please write me as soon as you receive this & Read it & give me your advice in the matter & what is best to Do if Mr McLeod has his property in his own name if it is in his wifes but I Do not think so I could hold them as all the goods he Bought was for the wife & children & negroâ€™s.â€ 1860 Also included are a document and a letter concerning the sale of enslaved people by the Kelley family of Sumter County. They were enslaved by the estate of Simon Kelley 1787â€“1852 which was being handled by his daughter Sarah 1812â€“d. Sarah Kelleyâ€™s brother-in-law Castus Belk writes: â€œI received your letter requiring me & the other parties concerned to arrange the matter with the old lady on the terms I have assertained by Sarah Kelleyâ€™s husband Mr Drury Boykin that the old lady will come to no agreement as yet But I have sent her a return showing to give her concent to the sale of the negros and for her to assigne which if she dose will be presented to you by Mr B Kelley if she dose assigne it and it answers to the perpose intended I shall be glad to hear from you for the old lady intendes to make no defence at all. NB beware of the man R.K. but pick all out of him you can getâ€. September 1856 R.K. is Reddick Kelley 1815â€“1886 another Kelley child who witnessed the following assent to sale included in the collection: â€œState of South Carolina Sep 8th / 56 Sumter District I the said Sarah Kelley of the said state and district do hereby assign and give my consent to the sale of the said negros belonging to the Estate of Simon Kelley Dec of the said state and district here unto my mark Reddick Kelley X Sarah Kelley / her markâ€ Finally there is an intriguing letter from fellow lawyer James Hart Norwood concerning the trial of an enslaved man for an unknown crime: â€œI attended the trial of Kellyâ€™s negro on Thursday and we achieved a clean victory verdict â€˜not guilty.â€™ Beasley says I made the best speech he ever heard from me. I spoke 55 minutes Marley followed spoke 45. The trial was at Brownâ€™s house he gave his testimony in bed. Mrs B- gave us thunder during her examination our argument but Marley will give you a graphic description of it when he sees you.â€ June 14 1858 We did not find a record of this trial in newspapers from the time. Of interest to historians of enslavement in the law and legal history in antebellum South Carolina. unknown

Initially published in two volumes in 1946 this work is Montgomery's first-hand account of his military commands during World War II such as the Western Desert campaign which ensured his reputation as one of Britain's greatest military leaders."Bernard Law Montgomery 1st Viscount Montgomery 1887-1976 was a British general in World War II. Educated at Sandhurst he distinguished himself in World War I and remained in the army becoming known as a tough and efficient leader. In August 1942 Prime Minister Winston Churchill appointed him commander of the British Eighth Army in North Africa which had recently been defeated and pushed back to Egypt by German General Erwin Rommel. He commanded the British army in the North Africa Campaign and forced the German retreat from Egypt after the Battle of El Alamein 1942. He commanded troops in the Allied invasion of Sicily and Italy 1943 and in the Normandy Campaign leading the British-Canadian army group across northern France and into northern Germany. Following World War II Montgomery was made a knight of the Garter and was created 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein in 1946. He became chief of the imperial staff 1946–48 and later deputy commander of NATO 1951–58. A cautious thorough strategist "Monty" often exasperated fellow Allied commanders including Dwight D. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good condition. Mild edge-wear with two small closed tears to the upper front spine fold and corner. Light rubbing in places. A small personal number library sticker to the lower spine. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. The book has been inscribed in the year of publication by the author to the front blank end-paper : ' To Virginia and Ashley with admiration and affectionate regards from Montgomery of Alamein Nov 1958'. The recipients were Sir Ashley Clarke and his wife Virginia Bell. Sir Henry Ashley Clarke GCMG GCVO FSA was a British diplomat who was et al. the UK ambassador to Italy. Later he was chairman of the 'Venice in Peril Fund' Wiki. Accompanying this book are FOUR Christmas cards addressed to the same recipients dated from 1960-67. All Four cards have been signed by 'Montgomery of Alamein' and each has a B/W photograph of Montgomery. Montgomery is best known for his command of the British Eighth Army from August 1942 through the Second Battle of El Alamein and on to the final Allied victory in Tunisia in May 1943. Following the Allied victory he served as NATO's Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe until his retirement in 1958. This detailed autobiography covers his childhood his wartime campaigns and the his post-war years. A highly collectible title with such attributes and signed ephemera.
