Child c. 1630/31 - 1699 was an English merchant and politician. He was an economist proponent of mercantilism and governor of the East India Company. He purchased Wanstead Manor in Essex in 1673 from the executors of Sir Robert Brooke and spent much money on laying out the grounds of the manor house Wanstead Hall. John Evelyn described him as "sordidly avaricious" !! Child's advocacy both by speech and by pen of the East India Company's claims to political power as well as to its right of restricting competition to its trade brought him to the notice of the shareholders. He was appointed a Director in 1677 rising to Deputy-Governor and finally became Governor of the East India Company in 1681. In this latter capacity he directed the Company's policy as if it were his own private business. He was a moderate in those days of the mercantile system and has sometimes been regarded as a sort of pioneer in the development of the free-trade doctrines of the 18th century. Though Child considered himself a proponent of the competitive market he simultaneously argued for a government-controlled interest rate and restricted trade among the colonies which would benefit England. Attractive Smyth sewn blue cloth hardcover with gilt stamped front cover and spine. New. $125. Reprint of the third edition. It was common during the eighteenth century to promote the study of Roman and comparative law for its liberalizing effect on the student of the common law. Wood's New Institute was the best attempt to promote this goal. It went through four editions in 1704 1712 1721 and 1730 and was the standard Anglo-American treatise of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and a well-thumbed reference for jurists who wished to add an element of civilian learning to their work such as Joseph Story. Wood also considers its role as an auxiliary to English law. As the title suggests it is not only a summary of Roman law adapted to the needs of students of English law but also a pioneering essay in comparative law. Wood pays some attention as well to Roman law's influence on the historical development of English law. Indeed he observes that "Fleta and Bracton would look very naked if every Roman lawyer should pluck away his sic feathers" ix. unknown

Garner Burn Richard. A New Law Dictionary Intended for General Use as Well as For Gentlemen of the Profession and Continued to the Present Time by John Burn. Originally published: London: Printed by A. Strahan and W. Woodfall 1792. 2 vols. i new introduction vii 442; 446 pp. Reprinted 2004 by The Lawbook Exchange Ltd. With a new introduction by Bryan A. Garner President LawProse Inc. ISBN-13: 9781584773566; ISBN-10: 1584773561. Hardcover. New. $150. Burn's dictionary was published posthumously by the author's son John Burn c.1744-1802. Intended to be a practical tool it eliminated terms of historical interest including several in Law French. The elimination of these entries cleared space for topics current with the late 1700s and longer entries. Indeed Burn's articles on such subjects as judgment jury purchase and will are broader more detailed and better organized than they are in earlier dictionaries. It is a valuable reference for those who want to see how legal terms were understood in the later decades of the eighteenth century. Richard Burn 1709-1785 was one of the most prolific and influential English legal writers of the eighteenth century. His most important books are Justice of the Peace and Parish Officer and Ecclesiastical Law which went through several editions. He was the editor of the 9th 10th and 11th editions of Blackstone's Commentaries on the Laws of England. Bryan A. Garner is the author of over 30 books including Garner's Modern English Usage 5th ed. 2022 and Reading Law: The Interpretation of Legal Texts 2012-coauthored with the late Justice Antonin Scalia. He has authored seven unabridged editions of Black's Law Dictionary from the 7th edition 1999 to the 12th edition 2024. Garner is a Distinguished Research Professor of Law at Southern Methodist University and also lectures at the University of Texas School of Law Texas A&M School of Law and Texas Tech School of Law. unknown

"This four-volume work was the culmination of an 18th-century bloodline that began in 1729 with the appearance of Giles Jacob's New Law-Dictionary which appeared in 11 editions through 1782. Marriott started a new genre: the law dictionary that was also an "abridgement"-- that is an alphabetically arranged restatement of the whole law subject by subject. . His four-volume set as ultimately published has remained one of the most obscure law dictionaries ever. Copies are extremely rare today: few libraries even at the institutions that have specifically built up their holdings in law dictionaries possess one. I for example was never able to examine a copy until the page proofs of this reprint were made available to me. My guess is that no more than 100 were printed. Fewer than a dozen copies are known to exist. The book has therefore received scant attention." --From the Introduction by Bryan A. Garner. Unlike earlier more concise dictionaries this work was designed as an extensive reference for a wide audience-ranging from high-level legal professionals like barristers and solicitors to local officials such as parish officers and even laypeople like merchants and clergymen. unknown

Whishaw 1808-1879 a member of Gray's Inn set out to produce a law dictionary in the tradition of Rastell which would offer "the exposition of the common terms and phrases of the Law" Preface p. vi in a concise manner unlike the voluminous dictionaries that were being produced contemporaneously. Although intended as a simplification of terms and created for the young lawyer this is by no means a dictionary merely for the novice. Whishaw included French Latin and English words and phrases as well as "obsolete words" from "old legal historical and antiquarian writers" and cited early law books and dictionaries in the entries Cowell Blount Hale's Pleas of the Crown etc. This dictionary went into a later edition in 1832. In 1835 Whishaw published A synopsis of the members of the English bar. This important work remains uncommon institutionally and in the trade. unknown

Reprint of the fifth edition which was the last published during the author's lifetime. As Cowley pointed out the New Law-Dictionary first edition 1729 was both Jacob's masterpiece and "an entirely new departure in legal literature" that provided a model for several subsequent efforts. In contrast to earlier works each entry summarizes all of the laws relating to the subject and offers extensive interpretive commentary. Jacob 1686-1744 was also careful to omit obsolete terms. It was recognized almost immediately that Jacob had created a highly useful legal encyclopedia that was both more detailed and concise than any other abridgment of the period. An extremely popular work that went through twelve editions by 1800 it offers unparalleled insights into Anglo-American law during the eighteenth century.
