New. $22.95 The Preface describes the work as "a rapid survey of a wide field." The book is also interesting for the essay "The Vocation of the Common Law" based on an address to the Harvard Law School Association June 25 1895 in which Sir Pollock calls for a reciprocal legal arrangement between the judges of the United States and Great Britain when merited by an important matter at hand. He compares the legal relationship of Great Britain and the United States to that of Great Britain and British India. His argument concludes "There is no reason why we should not live in hope of our system of judicial law being confirmed and exalted in a judgment-seat more than national in a tribunal more comprehensive more authoritative and more august than any the world has yet known." p. 21 With an appendix giving a summary view of Anglo-Saxon law before the Norman Conquest. Sir Frederick Pollock 1845-1937 was one of the greatest British judges and legal scholars of his day. His treatises on contracts jurisprudence the common law and other subjects did much to clarify and systematize English law. Several of these were standard texts that went through several editions. He is also remembered for his collaboration with F.W. Maitland on The History of English Law Before the Time of Edward I and his correspondence with Oliver Wendell Holmes which was published posthumously as The Holmes-Pollock Letters. He was educated at Trinity College Cambridge and admitted to the Bar in 1871. He taught at the University of Oxford from 1883-1903. unknown books

He also shared Tocqueville's belief that the United States is a testing ground for the forces shaping the modern world. Chambrun's study of the federal government's executive branch offers a number of interesting observations. He doubts the value of the vice-presidency and argues that quadrennial elections promote liberty by creating momentary periods of political instability. He offers equally interesting observations on such topics as the Civil War the impeachment of President Johnson and the relationship between the Executive Legislative and Judicial branches. unknown books

Twenty-nine colonial charters and constitutions seventeen Revolutionary constitutions and twenty-three plans of union are the resulting source materials from which Fisher draws his analysis. The first contains a set of twenty-five maxims or regulae. The second treatise is a review of the history and practical application of criminal law estate law personal property law and the law of slander i.e. "the preservation of our good names from shame and infamy". The Use of the Law is probably not in fact by Bacon; it was first printed anonymously as Part II of The Lawyers Light 1629 by Sir John Doddridge. Among America's Founding Fathers Jefferson held Bacon in high esteem. In a 1789 letter to John Trumbull he said he considered Bacon Locke and Newton to be "the three greatest men that have ever lived without any exception." "At the time that he wrote judges and lawyers lacked legal treatises which cited American decisions and showed how far the English common law had been followed by American courts or modified to suit new conditions. Textbooks presenting cases from all states were needed in order to encourage the development of national judge-made law rather than particularistic local doctrines. Hilliard was one of the first and most voluminous of the authors who met these needs." DAB V:53. His vast legal knowledge is aptly employed in this important early textbook which provides a summary of the basic principles of American law. His success with this first work which went into a second edition led Hilliard to go on to write numerous other well-regarded treatises many of which went into numerous editions including The Law of Torts 1859 the first English treatise on the subject.
